Has anyone heard of converting an 1800 into a convertible. If so with what success? Are there plans?

Dave,
A friend of mine, Joe Lazenby, has a convertible 1800, though it is currently
disassembled. He knows some of the history of those conversions. I believe that there were a couple of companies doing it back in the '60s. See if you can get him at jlazenby@camphillsd.k12.pa.us Sometimes they have trouble with their
email. Somewhere I have a picture of one that I took at Watkins Glen
in 1973. I will dig it out, scan it and send it to you.

I would not chop the fins of and after seeing pictures of convertible 1800s I dont think I would cut of the top either. It looks a bit like an MG. Perhaps I'll chop my 122's top of. I think that would be more suitable.

You can check out the following web site

http://volvo1800pictures.com/

There is a section on Cabriolets that show case some of the 1800 convertables out there... Also in the current issue of Rolling from the VCOA is an article by John Parker that states the floorpan was designed strong enough to have offered a convertable with out much strenghtening.

Hope this helps some.

There's a "finless" 1800 in the customized section of that site. That is one sexy looking car. Looks more like a Ferrari than a Volvo. Here's the link.

As of yet I have not seen a "wingless" convertable. Not that I would ever chop a Swedish car, but add those looks to an 1800's soul - sounds interesting. Hey is anyone out there good enough with computer photo modification to remove the fins from one of the convertable pictures???

But what about the loss of directional stability when the fins are removed!?!?!?

:^)

Something about removing the fins makes the trunk look rather wide on those cars. Maybe its just the pictures.

I saw one last year. Vermont plates. I saw another one this year. Maine plates. Seems that it can be done, and the result is a sweet looking roadster.

M,
I may have seen the same car (red) in Brunswick, ME, with vanity plates "TOPLESS" which was to be taken literally because there were no provisions for a top, hard or soft, that I could see. The car looked really nice though.
