1995 940 blower won't work 900 1995

Hi all,

I'm posting this message for a friend of mine who owns a 1995 940 sedan. The interior blower (for heater and A/C) is not working and I was hoping this might be something fairly simple I could fix for her before it gets too cold this winter.

Apparently, the fan first started acting weird by only blowing air on the highest setting. Then it stopped working altogether. I read some info on the FAQ about a possible resistor pack gone bad or bad blower motor. If anyone has more info about what might cause this problem, please post it here or email me directly. I would appreciate any help on where in the car the bad parts are located and what parts to inspect/test to troubleshoot the problem.

Thanks very much,
Alan Robertson

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. Hopefully I'll get a chance this weekend to tear into the dash and find the problem.

Can anyone give me a description of the resistor pack for the motor? How would I identify that part? Anyone happen to have a picture of this area under the dash that could shed some light?

    Thanks again,
    Alan

    Alan,

I just changed the blower on my 1993 940. If the blower flat out fails to run, it is likely that the motor has reached it's useful life. Fortunately the replacement procedure is quite easy and pretty fast. You will need a torx bit to remover the door moulding to take out the kick panel. You will need to unmount the ECU and swing it out of the way. I would suggest you disconnect the battery before you begin the project. Both for your safety and that of the ECU. At that point the procedure become obvious to you. The fan is behind the knee bolster and mounts vertically. The fan motors fail because of moisture that leaks down from the intake on the cowl. FCP sells a replacement from ScanTech that appears to be virtually identical to the OEM (except for the price...try half). Same part number and everything. I took the counterweight clips from the fan basket off the old one thinking they were needed and the fan vibrates a little more than I would like it to, so I plan to pull the motor and remove the clips this weekend. It should only take you about an hour at most. One important thing to look for. There is a cooling tube that runs from the HVAC casing to the motor. This keeps the motor cool. Be sure that you place the foam gasket properly so as to not block the airflow. I would not worry about the resistor.

I agree with the unlikelyhood of the resistor going bad but you may want to check the switch befire you tear out the motor. Going by my mother-in-law's mechanic's diagnosis, I replaced the motor in her 240 (this is a multi-hour backbreaker in that model) and it turned out to be the cheap-ass plastic switch (the old motor ran fine once I had it out). I'm still pissed at myself for wasting all that time instead of just checking out the switch.

I've seen lots of these resistors burn up. The clue is that it will only work on high - that's straight off the switch. The resistor pack comes into play for the lower settings. They'er not too expensive, it's just a couple of coiled wires instead of a big ceramic beast like a 240.
