seat switching 200

So, I have the passneger seat almost completly disassembled in my living room, so far so good. I am trying to turn the passenger seat into a drivers seat and then I'll pick up a junkyard seat and use it as the passenger seat when I have the money (actually, I'll use the my drivers seat for now and it'll just suck for the passenger). I have run into a snag and need some quick help. The pivot arms are not interchangeable and, since I want the recline knob on the door side I need to switch the gears. I ahve that seperated from the seat but there is a clip that I do not know how to remove. It is about 1/2"ish around and has little ears that hold it to a square shaped bar. I need to remove these clips to switch the gears. Any idea how to remove these clips?

If I remember right when I did this, you'll use the driver's seat pivots and swap the passenger seat frames and foam to it? I was doing this because my upper seat back was in three pieces. You could just replace the foam with the block from the passenger seat, if your seat frame is decent.
Make sure all 8 big springs are present in the seat bottom.
Make sure the wire grid is ok. Put a layer of cardboard or carpet or an old shirt on top of the wire grid so it doesn't cut through the foam.
And WATCH YOUR FINGERS on the nasty little points that hold on the seat upholstery to the bottom frame. You can get a hell of a bad cut!

Yeah I know the clip you mean- inside the big plastic knob? It is a pressed on "one way" clip- they aren't supposed to come off. In the center of it there are two little fingers that are gripping the shaft. You've got to bend them away a little bit to get it to release. A tiny screwdriver or sturdy knife tip should do it. You just need to bend them a little- you want to bend them back when you re-install it all on the other side. Maybe there's 4 little fingers- I don't have one in front of me but I've had a lot of them in my hand.

      Ah, the stupid clip...

The clips change depending on the year (or maybe just different clip suppliers). I've taken apart 1979 and 1983 seats, and they were a bit different. Seems to me I got the 1983 clip off by rotating it using hammer taps on a screwdriver. There is one particular alignment at which it will slide loose. The trick is to get it to that alignment.

The 1979 I had to pry off and straighten it out afterwards.

If yours is like the 1979, you can drive it back on using a big socket (1 1/4"?--been a long time; experiment).

      Good luck.

Ken- is this a circular clip that has like 3 points where it touches the shaft?
        Usually called an "E" clip?

I wish, I have that tool. I think I've got it all figured out. I swapped a few seat parts from the other seat and I'll just be driving a 3 seater until next week, oh well. Now if I can just get all these rings back on the vinyl, I can install this thing and get up and leave for the Seattle in 8 hours. Oh, I wouldn't wanna sit next to me in the lecture I have to go to tomorrow.

I meant to tell you to leave the rings that are down inside the foam, just twist them open to free the crossbar that holds the upholstery tight in the middle of each cushion. I'll bet you figured that part out already.
They're not too bad to deal with as long as you have some kind of decent long-nosed pliers.
