Struts clunkin' Part II 200 1987

240 Sedan 87

Ok. This is the the third time Ive reassembled this strut!!!! I thought I undestood it, I guess I dont. It's still clunkin, and here's where.

If I rock the car by grabbing under the fender, I can see the strut rod move up and down making a huge clunk. If I rock the car, while putting downward force on the top of the strut rod with my hand, it doesnt clunk (I can tell this is happening when I drive - the strut cap is pushed up).

Anyway, all nuts are tightened, Ive replaced the strut tower assembly, and a new boot and bumper underneath, too. What is supposed to hold this strut rod from pushing up when the wheel comes up? I thought it was the top nut, which is super tight, but now Im not sure....man I am lost!!!

I dont do my own repairs to be a cheapskate, I do it to know more about the car, and have some fun too, but Im almost ready to take it to the repair shop...man that's gonna be tough.

Thanks again in advance!!

Curt

Maybe you need a spacer (bottom) in the tube housing? Sounds like the gland nut is not forcing the insert down all the way? The top nut should not require washer's..

I had clunking at the same time I replaced my struts. It turned out to be that the tube nut was loose (you've verified) and the bushing housings were out of round. I had the local mechanic press in new bushings about a year earlier, but he beat the crap out of them. So, for me, replacing the front bushings and housings did it for me. Probably pretty unlikely source for most people, but I thought I just pass it along for info. The indy Volvo guy the found this for me said that it happens occasionally.

if i remember, you said its only clunking on one side?if this is correct tear down both sides and see whats diff.? i suppose this would be a nice time to have an extra spring compressor.you know that you dont have to take the tower off the car? by this time you should be getting pretty quick at this.first i would try adding the washer not to fix it, but for test purposes.stick with it.something is missing,i can almost see it!

I missed "Part I"...are you using an impact wrench to tighten the top nut? If you aren't then the strut is just spinning around and around and around.

Yes, I am using an impact wrench. I even put the washer in there. Is it possible that I'm hitting the end of the threads, and should put another washer in there?

Thanks,

Curt

When I installed the IPD/TME springs, I had to use the spring compressor as an expander to put pressure on the top perch/strut mount while using an impact wrench. I think! Hope this helps.
