'85 740 GLE, hard to start. 700 1985

Hi all,
I have a '85 744 with 175K on it. I put in a new starter couple of months ago, but it still takes 2 tries to get the car started, once in a while it will start on 1 longer try. I have tuned it up with new plugs, oil, cap and rotor and even cleaned out the throttle butterfly area and the flame trap. What am i missing or do they all just start like this?

Confused in North Dakota.

    Rumour has it the checkvalve at the fuel pump fails causing the symptoms you describe.

      is the check valve on the intank pump or the out of tank pump? would i need to replace the whole pump?

        It's on the output of the main pump, and it can be replaced separately. About $15 bucks at the dealer. Be prepared to deal with spilled fuel- goggles, etc.
