Cold Start Problems - Winters coming 200 1989

Hi all,

It been starting to get colder now as were moving into winter here in Canada. I'm noticing it's getting harder to start my brick especially if its been sitting a day or two. The battery is a genuine volvo (2 years old) and it reads approx 11 volts when staring ( the guage reads a little past 12 when started). It cranks quite a while before starting hitting the gas hepls sometimes. It use to have hot start problems as well however they seem to have stopped since the weather has cooled (go figure).

Recent replacements include
- temp sensor
- in tank pump
- crank sensor
- check valve on main fuel pump
- used AMM

Any thoughts would be appreciated

    Big Joe,

You should have more than 11 volts when starting... battery should be something like 13+ something like that... perhaps your voltage regulator is bad (worn) in your alternator. Quick and easy fix, as I understand it from the other bricksters, but I can't say from experience as I haven't had to do mine yet.

Your entire electrical system operation is dependent on proper voltage and if yours is low as you indicate, several things are out of whack... voltage to the coil is low therefore the high voltage to the spark plugs is likewise not as high as it should be, therefore a weaker spark. The output of your sensors will be affected as well and the computer will make erroneous decsions.

You don't mention replacing the spark plugs, distributor cap and rotor, and spark plug wires, which is where I would start if it were my car and acting this way. Ensure that the basic ignition parts are up to spec and then go from there.

I hope you find it soon! Please post back to the board so that we might learn the results.

    Good Luck!

    Regards,

    TomD

      Yeah,

I've done the voltage regulator as well all all the general - plugs, wires, etc.
I wonder if its the alternator not charging the battery, I did intall a used one two years ago. I'll keep trying

      thanks,

        Big Joe,

Yeah, I think the alternator is not charging properly, and since you mentioned hard to start after sitting for a few days, you might have something slowly draining the battery. Have you done any electrical leakage tests? Bentley has some good steps outlined to check for that.

Have you cleaned all the connectors at the battery, coil, grounds, fuses, etc?

        Good Luck,

        TomD

Had the battery tested and it's good. I will try cleaning all the connectors. I'm thinking if it was the alternator, would it not just totally die after a while. I do have a new voltage regulator on it as well.

well i had cold startin problmes, one of the issues was that the distributor wire from the coil worked itself loose and i just put a bit of soap on the inside and it sticks good now, also your alternator belt could be loose, and only charge infrequently.

Eliminate the battery possibility by trying a cold start with another battery connected with booster cables. BTW battery voltage will always drop below 12 volts while starter is engaged. This is normal. Did you change the coolant temp sensor or the temp guage sender?

I did the coolant temp sensor. Could it have anything to do with the coil. The only reason I'm asking is beacause a have a spare one and wonder if I should swap it.

PS just had the battery tested and it's fine thanks.

I had a starting problem with 91 940 turbo a couple of years ago when weather turned cold. Turned out the be spark plugs. Replaced them and hard start went away. Don't ask me why. Maybe someone else has the technical explanation.

If you have the 561 computer, volvo has an upgraded eprom (chip)for it that helps with cold starting and a few other things.
About $68-120 (US) depending on where you get it
