turn signal shuts off engine... not good... anyone???

Ok, here's the deal, I've posted this problem a number of times now, but it seems as if my problem has reached its final maturity. Originally, with the engine off, hitting the brake pedal or turn signal would shut off the stereo... THEN the problem moved on to when the engine was running... a turn signal or brake pedal would do the same thing, but only intermittantly.

NOW, the car will just spontaneously shut off while driving... the entire car, (power and all) will shut off for about 1 second, then restart... it does this for about 10 seconds, then goes away and drives normally until it does it again.

I originally thought it was a bad ground, but after a weekend of tearing the inside of my car apart, I have found no such bad ground.

Here's what's new...

in tank pump
fuel pump relay
voltage regulator
timing belt

Does anyone have any suggestions? Is this a short? bad ground? Bad computer? bad alternator? NOTE< it still does all of this with the car in the off position, ie I don't htink it is the ignition switch.

I would appreciate any serious help you could give me. Thanks.

turn signal shuts off engine... not good... anyone??? 700 1988

I would start at the fusebox, and look very closely at the connections to the fuel pump relay and the ignition suppression relay. Could be somethings burnt, or melted and pulled away a little bit. The whole fuse and relay board comes out, see the 700FAQ. You want to look at the wires coming right to the bottom side of the relays.
Good luck!

flasher unit is next to stereo--start there?

yo weezy,

your prob is getting more and more complex, kinda like my bad back....

we are talking bout a '240?

i know that on '81-83 the flasher unit is down there next to where the stereo wiring would be...put in a radio shack stereo in my '83 while back, had some weird situations after i replaced original flasher unit which had gone dysfuncitonal.

radio shack stereo has r.f. suppressor thing, in line w/main power feed. keeps noise from ignition syst. down....big black box seemed to bang against flasher unit, cause intermittent prob. like yours.

no probs. since i made sure flasher unit was well secured using original factory clip, prev. owner had just left the thing dangling...also lashed down rf supressor w/ wire ties, cleaned up installation as it were.

take your time, elektrical stuff can be a hedbreaker if you let it.

sounds simple but prob. is usually one of the little things imho.

been there done that.

I completely removed the stereo, it still does it. The wiring hasn't been touched. I've looked at every bit of wiring coming out of the fusebox area, including below the fusebox and I can't see anything wrong with it.
