Ran Without Oil For About 90 Seconds, B230 Engine 700 1990

I did the one of the dummest things ever while changing the engine oil. I started the engine and ran it about 90 seconds idling (rev'ed it once)before realizing I hadn't added the engine oil yet - dum, dum, dum. I had just had it out and warmed it up before draining the oil, so oil was still clinging to the surfaces, at least to the cam which was still oily after running it without oil. I didn't hear anything unusual and it runs good as usual.

Has anyone had any experiences doing this kind of dum thing and do you think it hurt the engine?

Thank you.

I wouldnt sweat it, the heat build up after 90 seconds of idle really isnt going to be that much without oil in it as the res inside the engine will take car of the rest for that long at least, you might want to consider a product ive used ever since i ran an onld 82 honda accord out of oil, i put this stuff called pro long ( maybe youve heard of it maybe not ) i ran that honda for 25 miles without oil, got to a gas station filled it back up and kept on going some pretty awsome stuff i wated one of there informercials and they enptyed out a V8 and filled it with sand and ran it for 5 min true or not im not sure but the stuff did what it said it would do.

All you can do is drive now. Maybe a short oil change interval this time.

Chances are that being no load on the car it'll live - ITSA VOLVO!!!!

Driving and loading the engine is way harder short term on bearing surfaces than zero load.

I ummm saw a mechanic do this to a car I had owned, once too...20 seconds, no reving...but he WAS wondering why the oil light didn't go out.... car was fine.

I did the same, for about 5-10 seconds about a year ago...

Note to self: If you have a remote starter, never work on the car with the rmote in your pocket!!!!

Wanna talk about scaring yourself to death? Under the car, roll over onto the remote, and the car goes va-va-va-vrooom!

I don't even want to think about what that could do if you were changing the fan belts. You really need to get into the habit of taking that thing out of your pocket or ALWAYS taking the negative lead off the battery. I think your story will prevent me from ever getting one since I would definitely space it out myself.

Ran Without Oil For About 90 Seconds - Safety FIRST

GREAT POINT!!

I almost needed to change MY shorts just reading his post.

I did once did something almost as bright when changing a steering rack without disconnecting the battery on a V6, metal hp line shorted starter terminals....good thing my coveralls caught the "spill"...

Ran Without Oil For About 90 Seconds - Safety FIRST

I've been zapped so many times while working on cars. You forget how bad it feels untill it happens again. I've had a jolt go through my finger and out the nail on the other side. That felt bad.
Having it start unexpectedly is a whole different kind of bad. I've seen the pics of a flayed finger from a fan belt accident. It makes me sick to even think of it. Come to think of it, I should put together a safety tips page and include a pic like that. That will give people food for thought.

I did this with a motorcycle many years ago; it ran for about a mile then seized a ring on one piston; other was ok. No damage to cam or bottom end. Oils today are much better. I expect you are fine; what can you do except run it, pay close attention for a while, and hope.
