auxilary- air valve and cold start valve. 140-160 1973

I need a air-auxilary valve for a 1973 -B20F- 144 sedan.also need a cold start valve for the same car. thank you, beanbag...

I was also looking here (old posting) for an aux air valve, no good used ones out there, apparently.

The engine will run fine without it. I just bypassed the valave altogether, and pinched off the line in the middle. There may be some air sneaking through. Or just close it off altogether. It may be hard to make idle when cold, but it will run. I'm in Chicago, so it's cold.

Also, I didn't like the thermal timer switch, which failed anyhow. I routed the cold start injector back to a toggle switch on the dash, and flip it on foro a "choke", and I have better control over the mix. The cold start will over-rich even a cold engine.

An additional benefit to the toggle. I had a ground failure to the injection system in the middle of the night, but was able to run the car home on just the cold start injector at about 40 mph.

They say I'm clever, but lazy. It's true I guess, but I'm cheap to make up for it.

Are you sure you need both? what are your symptoms?

Aux air's are somewhat prone to failure. Buy a new one from RPR, the dealer, or an import specialist that deals right with Bosch.

the cold start fuel valve is extremely seldom a problem....

Beanbag, did you test the circuit for continuity ? Put the pointy end of the test light into the connector (use a test lite that looks like a screw driver with a wire coming out the end,and make sure it is not the type that has a battery inside,ok?) Run the wire end of your tester to ground and have someone crank the engine. If the light, lights, then your voltage supply to the cold start valve is good. (Sorry, forgot to mention that the conn. has two wires, one goes to grnd. the other comes from the ignition switch.. the 12 v supply) Stick it into the "hot" side and turn the key to crank position to test. Next, test for a good grnd. on the other terminal. You can do this with and ohm meter. Stick one meter lead into the connector and the other to a known good ground.
Next you need to check for cold start valve (CSV) operation. You need two short pieces of wire and of course your battery. You can do two tests if you like. First test is to simply conn. a grnd. wire from neg. to the CSV and a + wire to the other terminal. Listen for a small "click" when you make and break the electrical conn. The second test, is to apply the Pos. and Neg. wires to the CSV with it connected to the fuel hose with the system up to fuel pressure. (I am making a big assumtion here, that your system is capable of pressurizing... ) When you apply 12V to the CSV, which you have in a metal can or jar and you are NOT SMOKING... you will see it spray out the end, hopefully.
If your tests where positive for the wires and CSV, but still no fuel spray, then you need to listen for the fuel pump running for a short period of time when you turn on the key, have you done this ?? Let us know, Tom in Oregon

the fuel pump is working, and i used a test light to check the CSV and it is getting power...i didn't hook it direct to the battery so i'll try that. thank you, beanbag...

Beanbag, ok, the pump is running and the CSV has power to it.... but how do you know if the other side of the CSV has a ground ? Pull the CSV from the manifold and stick it in a jar and crank again. If it doesn't spray, then you have 3 possibilities left to chk. 1st,the CSV isn't grounded, so it's not activated... 2nd, the CSV is bad... and 3rd, you don't have fuel pressure in the ring main so no spray, even though the CSV is opening. Your almost there... Tom
