help deciding if it's safe to buy!! 700

I'm looking at a 1988 700 series wagon with 300K. the price is cheap 1k, and Ive been told that 1988 was a particularly good year for Volvos. Here's the catch: It's in another state, and I can't drive prior to buying. This is a one owner vehicle with service records, by the way. I guess that what I need to know is-are the 700 series wagons as reliable and as durable as the 240's? I mean, with 300K I wouldn't bat an eye with an '88 240. but a 700 series?? give me some advice guys.

Yeah, I know what you mean. Every time I look on e-bay, I find the perfect Volvo! Read the descriptions, and they are all perfect! There was a low milage 760 on there just a couple weeks ago, and I worried all week about it. I wanted it bad. But, when I came to my senses, I realized it was located clear across the county, and I would be buying a one-way flight and trusting the car to get me home, a three days drive from the 760's location. Not! We like to think sellers are good honest folks, and certainly some are. But, I guess I am just not trusting enough to buy a car whose tires I have not kicked . . .

Yes, the 700 series is at least as reliable as the 200 series. If this is a turbo, watch out for worn turbo seals, could be costly. If it is the 16 valve engine or the V6, don't go there unless the service record is complete and has religious t-belt changes and oil changes. The diesel is what I drive and love but in the US, I understand they are a bit problematic to service and maintain, I would probably avoid it.

If on the other hand it is a NA 8 valve 2.3 petrol, then you shall have no worries if indeed it has been serivces properly. Good luck, I say.

Honestly I'd wait till you can see it, and drive it. While 1K isnt a lot to some, it can be a waste of money if it has some issues. I've bought a few cars sight unseen, but with a lot less miles on them. Yes we all know 300K isnt that much in a volvo....but some can be in very very poor condition at this point. Take a look at ebay, you'll see what prices prevail for cars with that many miles. I'd wait and look elsewhere, or get a lower price

There's a 89 740 GL near my house that i attempted (and actually did) test drive... it needed to have trans fluid added, needed gas, Jumpstarted twice, burned oil, trans didn't shift well, and it vibrated like mad.... and they were asking $477 for it... It wasn't worth what they were asking by far... needed way too much work.... So just be careful what the price is and what your paying for..

I picked up my 89 745 with some front end damaged that cost me $600 to fix and i paid $1000 for it and it had 188k on it, id deff look around and make sure this one doesnt have something wrong allot of time's the 700 series has a 200k mile mark where things just start dieing but i have seen some make it to 300k and people sell them at these poitns so make sure it is worth it, you said it doesnt run so figure out whats wrong with it before you even think of buying people tend to run these out of oil from what i have seen and overheat them.

      Thanks
      Jason

Sorry, I didn't say "doesn't run" it's in another state, and I can't drive it before I buy it. This is a one owner vehicle and is said to run "perfectly" whatever that means. I have serious reservations purchasing a car sight-unseen, but I have a hard time finding a rust-free vehicle here in the midwest.
I've just never had to put this much faith in another mans assessment of a vehicle before.

If thats the case why dont you just bid on one on ebay in a state you know pretty much doesnt have rust, run a car fax report on it since they do list the vins on ebay if all looks good youd be better off taking your chances there then just calling someone and saying hey blah blah blah, at least this way you get it cheaper too.
