Lets play name that smell....... 700

Ok... the patient is an 87 740ti w/ 219k, bought the car at 216k and minus a power steering belt it has been problem free. Ok maybe not problem free, the problems I know about are: Oil leak, dont know where it is coming from and i cant find it, coolant leak? I topped up the coolant right after i bought it at 216k and yesterday i checked it and added about 20 oz. The smell is this, under heavy acceleration I notice a strong "fish-like" odor coming through the vents when the heat is on, after a few minutes or a stick of incense it usually dissipates rather quickly. Any ideas on what might be causing this smell... and it is only under very heavy acceleration. ANOTHER QUESTION: when idling at a stop or in a drive-thru i notice another different smell. Its somewhat like when you spill oil on the head and it burns .... i think this might be due to the oil leaking onto something hot? any ideas here.... YET ANOTHER QUESTION.... what places should i check for oil leakage, i know its not the drain plug or filter ... where else should I check? ANOTHER question: im driving around today when i notice steam coming from around the instrument cluster but it subsided when i turned off the heat, i also noticed it yesterday coming from around the passenger side floor, again any suggestions?.... i know the # of questions posed may be daunting but any help is much appreciated...

I had similar(steam) problem with my '79 245. It was a leak in the heater core. Once I removed it, I was able to re-solder the seam that was leaking. The other symptom was that the windows would fog.

smell, coolant leak in the heater core? That make some sense to the steam from the instrument cluster.

As far as oil leaks, front and rear seals, oil cap, valve gasket ect.

Can't help with the smell other than the heater box behind the dash has a leak.
That my be your coolant leak. As far as the oil leak goes there are several places to start. One clean the engine top to bottom. The main spots to check for is the rear main seal. That is where the engine and transmission meet. Front seals behind the timing beat cover. The oil return line or tube. That is the tube that runs from the turbo to the engine block. It has a paper gasket where it meets the turbo and a large o-ring at the engine end. The oil filler cap seal on the valve cover. From there you have the oil pan gasket, and the oil filter extension. That's that silver part the oil filter screws into that attaches to the engine block. From there you have the oil feed lines that pump oil to the turbo and the oil cooler itself. Lastly are the O-Rings in the distributor. There are others but I can't remember the rest. Those are the biggies in order of oil loss possibilities
