740 turbo oil trap questions 700

If I blow into that tube that goes off the AMM to Turbo pipe and into the oil trap, is there suppose to be resistance? Or should the air just blow through? Because its like trying to blow a golf ball through a garden hose, nothing gets through. I'm just wondering if my oil trap needs replacing because its also leaking from the bottom. This is on a 88' 740 turbo.

Wait a minute...

That tube off the AMM intake hose first goes to the Idle Control Valve, right?

Well, that could be your resistance.

Try entering the air into the oil dipstick tube and feel for it out of the plastic "Y" connector between intake manifold ports #3 and #4. Pull off the long "S" hose from the Turbo to that spot.

I had success cleaning out my oil box using a $.99 gallon of Kerosene and letting the box soak in a pail of it.

You'll feel how much lighter is is empty.

Replace the rubber o-ring.

One thing I was wondering about that oil separator box... Is there one seal or 2 to the block? there's two connections (one small opening, and one long tube)... is there only a seal on one of them?

One seal. On the big opening at the rear. About a 3" ring whose size is listed in the FAQ somewhere.

the front opening site on top of the drain tube.

If your box is badly coked, pass a length of wire down the drain tube until you feel it touch the bottom of the oil pan. Just to check to see is anything is clogging this tube.

FCP Groton sells a replacement drain hose. So, I figure there is a way to re-install the beast.

I think that the 16v engine has a much different oil separator box, it looks NOTHING like the one i saw on a web page mentioned in the FAQ ( http://www.mikeponte.com/volvo/oiltrap.htm ) i mean, the two holes that the separator box goes in are not even on the same level on my engine.... I'll take a pic before re-assembly

You should be able to blow right through and feel a little air coming out the oil fill cap hole. If it doesn't, the breather box is clogged.

Ok, thanks. I'll try blowing through the dip stick tube with the oil cap off, I should be able to blow through with no resistance there right?

yeh...but blow real softly 100psi would NOT be clever!

better still just pull the PCV system and clean/replace its nto a bad job and gives piece of mind...

that big pipe (i know exactly the one you mean caused me real greif...i replaced the breather box, cleaned everything, replace seal on oil filler and still had oil blowing out the filer seal...

that big hose was I THOUGHT clear (i could run water thru it..) but i got it off again and REALLY thoroughly cleaned it (i.e. clamped to a stick in a U then filled with GUNK and rodded it with a piece of plastic covered wire - so as not to damage it) and repeated...got an amazing amount of hardened coke out of it and about DOUBLED the effective internal diameter...propblems disapeared...

Now..on mine it goes from the AMM hose to the top of the flame trap and is about 30 secs to remove ...so I would take it off and really check it...
