Hello, Has anyone put a K&N air filter in their volvo ? I know that they make them for my year and model. My issue with it is, well it is my dads issue. He thinks that it will let too much extra dirt into the engine, thus decreasing engine life. I disagree with the knowledge that all of my "offroading" friends, who all drive jeeps, have one. I dont see the problem. It is much more durable than the paper stock filter. I might just buy it anyway. Oh well. If anyone has any knowledge on the issue please help.

Hello,
I agree totally with Kenric in this matter, but the simple math is what I look at when buying parts for my car. Here goes....
Say... 100,000 miles or so of driving
You should sanely replace the a/f every 35,000, sooner if you live in a messy environment.
3 x paper filters @ $30 each = $90
1 x K&N filter + oiling kit = $60
Plus if you plan on keeping it for more thatn 100,000, or if you transfer the filer to the next car.....
Need I say more...

More simple math says that FCP Groton offer a Mann (v. good quality) air filter for NA 240's at $4.95, so with 35,000mi changes you could go (well, you figure it out...it's a lotta miles) before you'd pay out the K&N. I'd be really interested to hear if anyone has done a stopwatch test on the power gains, and a careful, many tankfuls over many months, gas mileage comparison of the K&N to a FRESH stock paper filter. Non-turbo 240's are a pretty sedate beast, and I'd wager the difference is too small to be felt.

Robert,
I haven't put a K+N on my Volvo, but my son says they're great. He has used them before. He tends to research things a bit, too.

true, the k&n's flow great, Ive used them in the past, but they do let more dirt through.
The Amsoil filters let less dirt through( yes I sell the stuff, but on an experimental fuel milage vehicle \I used to have I got better fuel milage with the K&n filter, but I had to change oil filters more often due to contamination build up)

A K&N filter on a rather weak N/A engine like the B230F won't do jack. I should know, I bought one because I thought it would. Now if you had a turbo, that might be a different story.
As for letting in dirt particles and what not, a K&N filter's design inherently lets in larger particles than a paper stock filter. K&N filters were designed with track racing and stuff in mind, to allow greater air flow. What most people don't realize is that on the track, your engine is rebuilt every few races, and thus engine wear/tear isn't too big of a deal.
It's a tradeoff. Listen to your old man, it's not worth it on your car.

I read through all the other posts and of course they are the usual "all in one's head improvement" BS. Thanks for setting the guy straight, so I don't have to.

I second that. I put a K&N in my stock '89 240DL 2 years ago. Did I see an improvement? I'd be lying if I said yes. Then I added the iPD hi-flow exhaust on the car, did I hear an improvement? Yes. Did I feel an improvement? A little. If I had another 240, would I buy another K&N? Probably not. Although, if I planned on keeping the car for x years, I may just so I would save a few bucks in the long run.
