all idiot light flickering on and off...... 200 1985

On the way to work this morning my batt.,light sensor, parking brake, and brake failure, lights came on. Needless to say i kinda freaked out, as i was travaling down the interstate at 70 mph. Then i hit a bump and they went off, then on then off, then flicker........ect. I figure i got a short some where in the wires.I do not have a manual so i was wondering if someone would be kind enough to point me in the right direction.
TIA

What you saw is the classic symptom of failure of the wiring harness the runs under the front of the engine.

There are three wire in there. The location of the harness is frought with heat, cold, oil, road crud, etc.

The Big fat red wire seldom goes bad. It carries the chagring current to the battery via the starter.

The thin red wire and the thin black wire loose their insulation. If the black one grounds, you get the oil light.

When the thin red wire grounds you get the other waring lights. It is grounded whenever the alternator is not charging, as when the key in in Position II and the engine is stopped. When the alternator spins, the ground is lost and the lights go out.

It is that same wire that provides exciter voltage to the alternator rotor. If the waring light is on while the engine is running, the wire is grounded and the alternator is not charging.

The quickes fix is to put in a shoo-fly (railroad term) around the bad wire. Run it from the spade lug connection on the alternator to the red wire inside the gray connector on the firewall. Route it along the RF fender and across the firewall.

At the connector end, you can open the connector and see how all the terminals fit in. Clip off the red one and solder it onto your shoo-fly wire.

If you are unable to tell which is the red, it's in cell #3. The cells on that side are Black (#1), Yellow (#2), Red (#3), and open (#4). On the second side of the eight cells are Blue-Yellow (#5, across from #1), and the others are open.

At the same time you may want to do the same shoo-fly around for the oil pressure sender light, too.

When it's done, you'll have the fat red wire in it's original location, and the other two running the new route. The old thin red and thin black wires will be connected to nothing at both their ends.

Good Luck,

Bob

Thank you, Bob. I didn't have time to check out my car today. I spent too much time finding a headlight switch. You have made the rest of my repair alot quicker and easier. I saw a post about rerouting the wires on the alternator on the board a few months ago and had it in my head to do it, but of course I put it off as "not necessary". Gotta keep this thing working properly, the wife loves it. Thanks again Brickboard!

What is a shoo-fly? Answer........ 200 1985

It's an old railroad term for temporary track laid to get around a wreck.

In 240 (others?) term is it a wire to get around a messed up wire.

The difference is that in the Volvo situation the old wrecked wire is isolated from the regular connections, and the shoo-fly becomes permanent.

Unfortunately I don't have a picture of either variety.

Hope this helps.

Good Luck,

Bob

check your wiring harness part that runs underneath the engine block to the alternator. My '84 245 (same color as yours) did this a year ago and within 5 days the alterntor VR blew because of shorted wires. If this is the case re route the wires to the alternator via-a different route.

Best,
Chuck

I encountered a similar problem last night driving from VA to PA. My headlight switch has also stopped working( I think this may be the cause of the problem, my wife also told me last night that the headlights flickered off and on a few days ago). Now my headlight switch will spin around and around with no effect and the idiot lights are on very dim when I start the engine. Could it just be the switch causing the problems? In a few minutes I'm going out to find out the problem, I'm going to start with my headlght switch and see if that solves it. I saw your post when I logged on and thought this might help you, I'll let you know if that does it, maybe we can fix yours, too. If any other BB'ers have any info, please, I am a 150 miles away from my wiring diagrams so I can't look and see if the headlight switch could affect my dash lights.
Happy Holidays Brickboard!!!
