New Inner Tie Rod or new Rack. 700 1991

Happy Holidays Everyone.

Need your advice and opinion. Have any you replace your inner tie rod? Is the inner tie rod removable and replaceable item or do I need a new rack.

Why am I asking? Because even after replacing all front suspension pieces with new/improved ones, I still have a small amount of annoying steering wheel shake. Items I have already replace; ball joint, outer tie rod, struts, springs, IPD sway bar, and radius rod and control arm bushings, as well as all other bushings that do not need to be pressed out to replace. The car also got new tires, tire balance, and alignment.

The only front suspesions pieces that I have not replaced are the press in bushings, inner tie rod, rack.

Thank for your reply.

Had a front wheel shake on our 91 740. Just did the front bushings. The inner strut rod bushing (where it bolts to the frame) was almost like new so I left it but the inner control arm bushing was shot, like really shot. It was allowing the control arm to move slightly fore and aft that resulted in a steering wheel shake (I'm guessing) plus a slight "clunk" when you let off the brake pedal after a stop as the front end "unloaded". Changing that bushing solved both problems. Both these are press off/on and this one gave my 12 ton press a fit. Examine the frame end bushings carefully. I found I could use a large pipe wrench to wiggle the control arm back and forth as I couldn't produce any loosness trying to shake the front wheels. If they're bad, most machine shops will let you use their press (often free) to swap them. Good luck

Teh inner tie rods are easily replaced by removing the tie on the boot, pulling it back, unscrewing the tie rod using large pliers, and screwing the new one in place. Use a big heavy-duty plastic tie to re-secure the rubber boot. You should also re-align the front end.

Try grabbing the RF wheel at the 3 and 9 o'clock psitions and give it the wiggle test(then the left). If it's still a little loose after you've replaced the tie-rod end, then replace the tie rod(s).If your rack is sloppy and leaking, replace the whole thing.
