740 radio upgrade 700 1989

I picked up a volvo sr-7145/tp-7145 2 separate DIN radio/equalizer (the one with the separate cassette deck) off EBAY that I was hoping to replace my stock cassette radio with. It is complete with the entire center radio console including ash tray. I think it comes from a 760. I thought it would be an easy swap. But the wiring is very different and the console will not swap as I hoped.

Does this model have its own amplifier built in for four speakers? There is an extra 6 point DIN plug on the back is this an additional amplifier for extra speakers? I haven't tracked down an owners manual or wiring diagram yet, any advice where? I assume with any upgrade I'll have to bypass the amp. How difficult is that?

I have the complete center radio console it came in but there are installation issues as the ash trays are different since I have the fuse panel behind my removable ash tray. The 740 has several distinct sections radio, tray, ashtray. The newer one's components fit into a frame that attaches to the dash.

Thanks for your help.

740 radio 6-pin DIN 700 1989

The 6-pin plug should be for the extra amp; if you can get to the boneyard, just about any 6-pin Volvo amp cable from that era will do the job. You may find both single-amp connector cables and occasionally a Y-cable which would take two additional amps. The amps and cables are not much sought after, so you may get the amps thrown in for only a couple of bucks extra. Unless you are a purist, or a deaf teenybopper with a need for 1000-watt stereo, the amps are perfectly acceptable as long as you have decent speakers. You're looking at around 15-25 watts per channel, not the currently-fashionable 100+.

In my 86 745, that din plug was unused if I remember correctly- then again I didn't have an equalizer. Bypassing the amp was easy for me, I just found it and spliced the wires. But my stock radio needed the amp... I don't know if that volvo model radio does not need an amp or not.
Good luck
Nate

This one has a 12 wires on the connector plus an extra orange and black connector for some type of accessory. So I assume that is enough wires for four speakers. The cassette unit plugs into the receiver through its own DIN.
I'm guessing the extra DIN is for more speakers to an amp.
