Lh2.2 motor, into a 2.4 car??? 900

List,

I'm in the process of dropping a LH2.2 motor ('87 740) into a LH 2.4 car ('93 940-actually the regina system). After many hours, I came across one HUGE problem. The reference sensor for the 2.4 car was in the bellhousing and the sensor for the 2.2 motor comes off the distributor. They both have Red, white and ground wires.... Could I splice and then let the ECU read the signal from the distributor instead of from the flywheel? What problems am I going to have? Other than this everything seems in order. Suggestions? Cautions? Rants telling me how stupid this is? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks-

Nathan A. Courtright

You must use the drive plate and RPM sensor from the Regina car on the 1987 engine. You will also need to change the Engine Coolant Temperature sensor under intake port three. The engine temperature sensor under intake port two is probably the same, but I would change it just to be safe. You can use the early distrubutor, just don't connect anything to the Hall effect sensor connector.

John,

I'm planning on using the transmission from the '87 (AW71). How do I swap the drive plate and sensor over if I'm going to do this? Is it possible to swap bellhousings to get the one with the hole that I need? I was hoping to do this without cracking anything apart... There goes the easy-swap idea.... :-( Thanks again-

Nathan

The drive plate replaces the original drive plate. Put the engine on number one TDC and point the arrow on the front of the drive plate directly at the RPM sensor. Yes, you can swap the bell housing, or you can cut a notch in it. The attached fuzzy picture is the notch pre-cast in a 1987 M46 bell housing. I don't think your 1987 AW 71 has the notch pre-cast into it, but you can easily copy the one from the later transmission. All B230 engines have the two holes drilled into the back of the block for the RPM sensor mounting. The Motronic fuel injection system used in Europe used an RPM sensor, so all blocks are set up for it.
