removing speakers 700 1989

i have an 89 740 sedan and i want to replace the speakers. how do i remove them because rivets are used to hold them in the door panels. the fronts are different than the rears, are they the same size? 5 1/4 in. right?
thanks

The stock door speakers are actually 5" speakers. Almost nobody makes these anymore, last pair I saw was in Crutchfield and were Polks, but that was 2+ years ago.

6.5" will fit in the front doors, 5.25" in the rear. The big problem is mounting depth of the speakers, especially in the rear doors.

Some aftermarket (high quality) speakers have larger magnets, and these may not clear the stock cutout in the sheet metal on the rear doors. I have a set of 5.25" Infinity Kappa (green cone) that were in my last 91 744 in the front doors (fit with alot of room to spare), tried putting in the rear and they wouldn't fit. I'm probably going to have to trim the opening a bit.

I bought 2 pairs of 6.5" Blaupunkt speaker for my little brother. He has a 95 Saturn. While these aren't the best speaker in the world, they're better than your stock ones and/or most offerings I've seen at chain stores...especially for this price ($9.99/pair!, 2 pair for 30$ with shipping!). Even better, these are shallow speakers and will probably fit the rear doors of the 740. I'll try one and see, but I'm pretty sure it will.

I assume your speakers are the same as mine, 92 740 since my 90 760 and 95 940 are the same as well. The front speakers are a strange size they are not 5.25 or 6.5 somewhere in between. However, 5.25's are the best fit for the fronts as well as the rear. The rear door speakers are actually 5.25. The problem with aftermarket speakers is they usaully run too deep. I had to purchase 2 sets of speakers and neither fit right. Try pioneer speakers PIONEER TS-G1347 5.25" 2-Way Speakers they have a shallow mounting depth and should work. I am trying to get those right now (see my post earlier on radiator hose). The pioneer's are less than 2 inches which is the depth of the original speakers.

Actually I just figured out on the front speakers - mine are 6.75. The top and bottom edges on the original are shaved down slightly, the round isn't, it has straight bottom and top edges. I'll keep you posted as I tackle the same problem. I am on my 4th set of speakers trying to find something to fit right w/0 having to cut the door panel.

Here is what is most likely to fit:

      Rear Doors, Pioneer TS-G1347
      5-1/4" 2-way Speakers
      ·Mounting Depth: 1-7/8"
      ·Tweeter Protrusion: 1/8"
      ·Sensitivity (Efficiency): 91dB (1W/1m)
      ·Frequency Response: 40 - 22,000Hz
      ·Cutout Dimensions: 4-3/4"
      ·Impedance: 4 ohms

      Front doors, Pioneer TS-G1647
      6-3/4" 2-way Speakers
      ·Mounting Depth: 1-5/8"
      ·Tweeter Protrusion: 3/8"
      ·Sensitivity (Efficiency): 92dB (1W/1m)
      ·Frequency Response: 35 - 22,000Hz
      ·Cutout Dimensions: 5"
      ·Impedance: 4 ohms

It is disappointing that we have so few options with speakers and wheels.

6.75? Are you sure about that? I tried to fit 6" in the front, and they barely got in. With 6" speakers, you can not have the factory speaker grilles on it anymore.

With the Pioneer TS-G1647 6-3/4" 2-way Speakers the Mounting Depth: 1-5/8" and the Tweeter Protrusion is only 3/8". I am looking into this and will have to get back to you. The original Pioneers I tried (TS-A1654) have the tweeter at protusion at about 3/4 inch and they almost fit underneath the Volvo grill, the mounting depth is perfect. speaker mounting screw holes for the 6.75 line up exactly at the top of the stock mounting screw holes but are off on the bottom and new holes have to be screwed in. The 6.75's fill up the entire speaker hole perfectly unlike the 5.25. I will work up some pictures this weekend. The 92 may have differnt doors than yours but are the same as the 90 760 and 95 940. i put pioneer 5.25" in front and back of my 940 (91) in about 5 mins per door - fit straight in, grills fit...evven fits the existing spade connectors...

nice easy job and all for £60 ($90)...

of course fitting the new cd head unit was slightly more fun...

Simply drill the rivets out. Hold the drill at various angles to keep the rivets from spinning. To re-mount, it's best to use a pop-rivetter (with washers if needed), but sheet metal screws or tiny stove bolts will do in a pinch.
