Shudder when braking 700 1989

Could someone give me advice on my car...When I brake there is a shudder in the steering wheel and front-end in general, not an ABS kinda thing, more sloppy than that. The car has 304k on it. thanks to all of you that help with us hapless folks

Sounds like you have warped rotors, real easy to replace and might as well do the pads since your going to have the claiper off too, look around you can find some decent prices on rotors and make sure to NOT have your existing one shaved they will just rewarp faster if thats even possible, i know i picked up the best pads and rotors i could find same one a shop would use as an alt to volvo parts for $200 and that was all 4 wheels all 4 rotors and pads. you can really tell when there if your doing 80 or so thats mph and you slam on the brakes and the car tries to go one direction.

Warped discs. Usual reason is incorrect or uneven torque when refiitng wheel nuts. Could also just be low quality discs.

Sounds like it could be warped rotors or worn out suspension parts. Look under the "Troubleshooting" section of this page for a thorough discussion: http://www.brickboard.com/FAQ/700-900/Brakes.htm

It's a combination of warped rotors and bad cone bushings. Any rotors will warp if the front end bushings are shot. You need:
(2) 1359906A Front Brake Rotor w/o Hub (Vented 10.25" diameter w/ Front Girling Calipers) fits 85-90 740/760: 87-91 780 $29.00 ATE
(4) 5a 6819057 Control Arm Stay Bushing Updated Version (4 req.) $5.50 Scan Tech

Good info, thanks 700 1989

Hi Rob,

I received the service history for my "new" car I've yet to pick up and noticed that at each service interval part of the routine was to torque the suspension fasteners. Good to know but it strikes me as excessive. Is this really the level of attention the 700/900 front ends require? No problem with it, just want to know what other DIY guys are doing.

Good tip on the rotors and pads. I'll check around when the time comes. IPD suggests that on the 700/900 one might consider replacing rotors at each pad change.

Looking forward to getting my baby home. The service manager at it's home dealership gave it two-thumbs-up.

I can't say that I've heard of periodic checking of the suspension hardware. Certainly can't hurt anything, but I've NEVER heard of a case of anything loosening up. Usually they're a bear to break loose... and in general parts last a long time, as with my 88 that got a new ball joint tonight (and is getting a broken swaybar end-link fixed tomorrow! ) and that's 197K miles on what appears to be an original ball joint.
Given the symptoms I had, which was shaking under hard left turns, but none when going straight, you should also make a check of the ball joints while you're inspecting and replacing. A quick push with a pry bar will tell you if they're good or bad.

I believe after going to the troubleshooting that it is the bushings, but I will also have the rotors checked. thanks guys
