940 (91) turbo, garrett turbo...

has been blowing oil into the intercooler for a while..up to 1/2 ltr per 100 miles if heavy boost is used...

going into the shop to have the turbo done (i just cant find the time...) 2 options:-

1. Brand new turbo £400 + the tax + labour (fitting)
2. Rebuild £170 + the tax + the labour (fitting)- providing its just a seals/bearing job, any more will cost more.

both jobs will be plus oil pipes, oil, antifreeze etc...

turbo leaks oil, but holds boost (8psi) has little detectable play and no nasty sounds (does 'whine' a bit when spooling up)

whats peoples thoughts...

I am no mechanic or even DIY, but my experience could be useful. I had a new Garret turbo blowing oil into hoses, intercooler and intake manifold. Every time I looked in, I would find half a cup of oil in the intercooler. Following instructions at 700/900 FAQ, I changed over to synthetic oil, put in all new Volvo PCV hoses, nipple, oil separator, etc. I found less oil in hoses and intercooler, but stil some. Then I took out the turbocharger oil drain pipe and found it clogged with crud. I put in a plastic pan and sprayed (stream rather than spray pattern) into it an engine cleaner called Purple Power which left the metal clean inside and out, rinsed it with water and put it back in the car with new gaskets. I think I cleaned the oil feed pipe too but I do not remember as clearly. That was more than a year ago and I have yet to find one drop of oil in now perfectly clean hoses or intercooler.

Brand new for 400 pounds? Cheap. I just had the Mitsu in my kid's car rebuilt for US$350: cleaning, new seals, balance. Solved the oil blowby.
