Engine Quits - Where to go from here? 200 1987

My daughter's 240 wagon with 130K and regular proactive maintenance quit on her while she was driving 30 mph on a country road, leaving her stranded there last evening ("My tank has never quit on me" - It did!). The battery cranks the starter but then nothing happens. The white fuel pump relay was replaced about 6 months ago. The tow truck driver mentioned "no fuel; fuel pump; injector".
We had it towed home. What is a logical diagnostic sequence that brick experts would recommend to fix this?
What is the normal life expectancy of stock fuel pump? Would you replace it at a certain mileage the way we replace water pump to avoid sudden death?
Thanks for any advice.

Engine Quits - Where to go from here? 200 1987

We've had several times when one of our older Volvo 240's stalled or wouldn't start because one of the fuses in the inside fuse holder wasn't making good contact. It doesn't happen anymore because I have cleaned them, tightened the fuse holders and coated the fuses and holder clips with a thin layer of silicone grease. These were older than your 240 but maybe an '87 could have this problem too.

2 things you can check in 30 seconds are the inline 25A fuse near the battery, look for corrosion etc... and, remove the oil filler cap and crank the engine, does the cam move?? If not then broken timing belt.

Some other things... can you hear the fuel pumps whir when you turn the key? The fuel pump relay will not 'pull in' unless the you are getting spark. So, what looks like a fuel problem could actually be a spark problem. A common no spark problem is the crank position sensor. I have also had to replace a power stage in an '87 740. Good luck....post your results.

I would check the inline fuse on the drivers side, near the firewall. The fuse melts under the cap and cuts off fuel. Sometimes it will make contact, sometimes not.

    Good Luck
