New style heater valve questions 200

Hi BBers,
I have installed a new style heater valve in my 242ti. It seemed to install fine and the cable moves the valve completely from on to off. However, the valve doesn't shut off the heat. It does adjust pretty low but never off. Did
I do something wrong, like the valve only goes in one way? So maybe I put it in backward? That's the only thing I can think off. Anyone have any experience with this new style valve? I installed it because supposedly it has better adjustment for the low heat range. Thank you.

Best regards,
Dave 82 242ti 279k mi.

I've been thinking about plumbing a ball valve into that spot, and having a hole drilled in the handle for cable operation.

Advantage would be smooth and leak-free movement, plus complete shut off.

Disadvantage is no thermostat, but I think the adjustability would obviate that anyway.

I had a ball valve in my old pickup for years without any problems.

Hi Carl,
Thank you for the suggestion. I may do that since that type of valve would be easy to find a replacement for. Thanks to all you folks for your replies.

You could use the ball valve in addition to the heater control valve. Leave the ball valve open in the winter and closed in the summer.

New style heater valve questions 200

It's a real pain when you put all that work into replacing something and end up with a bum new part. Have you disconnected the cable and tried moving the valve lever to be absolutely sure the cable is turning it completely off? (Even a small bit of leakage can result in a lot of heat output.) If so, you certainly have a case for the supplier to exchange it for another. Let us know how they treat you. I've had a new style valve in the 83 for many years now and it works well - sounds like you just may have had some bad luck.

I put one in my 245 a couple of years ago and it works just like yours. The colder it gets outside, the larger the range of temp control. It's not much better than the old one I took out. I have wanted to find a different type that would fit at NAPA but, haven't had the time.

Hi Ed,
Thank you for the reply. I mostly meant that mine doesn't seem to shut the heat off all the way. I'm starting to believe that it's a defective valve and I'm going to throw another one in there. Maybe I'll look into something from another car, also. Thank you for the suggestion. Happy rolling!
