After driving nearly two hours, I started losing power in the boost range. The boost gauge would even move into the 3 o'clock position - still no power. I did experience this before and replaced a leaky hose. Diff between now and then (as far as I remember) was the gauge didn't move that far. Quick prelim check of hoses appeared OK. I had replaced most of them already, except the silicone one. It's next. The idle also seemed rough when we got home. There were a few times where it 'felt' like it was working normal then degraded. I also need to investigate an oil 'splatter' on the hood in the area of the front of the Cam. There are signs of oil drops on various engie parts/hoses. Not alot, but some. Would an oil seal (Cam) rupture cause my condition? Thanks!

Besides the silicone rubber hose at the turbocharger outlet, what other hoses haven't you replaced?

I haven't replaced the hose the Ts off from the AMM to the Turbo hose. It leads to the 'flametrap' nozzle (which is new). I replaced the hose leading from the nozzle to the oil trap (which I inspected and 'cleaned'.) I also changed the small hose from the trap to the intake manifold. This one may get replaced again. It appears too pliable and may collapse if a vacuum is applied.

Other hoses I haven't changed include the one T-ing off the metal hose on the intake side of the intercooler. It is connected to the Idle control valve. The hose from the valve to the intake manifold has also not been changed.

Those are ones I need to replace. They appear hard but intact.

What symptoms would a faulty control valve show? What about a throttle switch?

As strange as it seems, the little short hose on the discharge side of the intercooler is usually the first to go. It wears out and splits on the bottom. You should remove, clean, and inspect it. Chances are it has a split. They are about $12 US at the dealer.

I removed and checked it already. Looks OK. There were traces of oil present. I removed and inspected all of the turbo hoses. Even the silicone one was in OK shape. She's running now. Just the idle fluctuating still remains.

I'm looking at a turbo rebuild kit. I've been quoted $153. Sounds resonable. Maybe if I can get the oil out of the picture, this problem will stay away.

If it weren't so dang cold here, I'd be able to do some more work/investigation!

Resolder the fuel pump relay since it powers the pump and AMM. Check the FAQ.

my cam seal is weeping and drops oil down onto the water pump..not the splatter you mention..however....my turbo is blowing a bit of oil into the hoses and that leaks out fro mteh joints and can splatter a bit....

I would pull the hoses and have a look inside them...if theres a lot of oil i might suspect failed seals i nthe turbo leading to the engine 'breathing' a lot of oil...this will upset the running - mines in the shop at the mo having the turbo done...but it has been noticable that it cokes plugs in no time and runs much better after the hosses have been cleaned (breifly) until they get coated again...

I pulled the hoses and there is some oil present. I had seen it in the past as well. The FAQ says it's 'normal' but I think I have a turbo problem. I checked the play in the turbo's shaft. It's not terrible and spins OK but definitely some play. I'm not sure it's less than 1/16th...either right at that mark or a bit more. I think it's time for a rebuild. I went looking for kits. Anyone know who has a good kit? I believe I have Mistubishi TD05 Turbo.

Also, I cleaned the throttle body today. It was all gunked up. Looks better but now the engine surges coming down from a rev. Any ideas?

all i can say is my engine has been eating lots of oil (circa 1/2ltr per 100 miles) and the inside ofthose hoses didnt look too bad at all - and no really noticable smoke....

but it sure runs a bit rough until u clean out the hoses

You might check your mass airflow sensor, mine went out and the car would seem to not have any power at times. Eventually it stopped running, so you might check that.

(Unfortunately) that's what I'm thinking. This morning, at idle, RPMs would fluctuate from 800 to 1500. It drove fairly OK. Mostly side roads, so no way to really step on it. The idle thing is puzzling.

Disconnect it and see if the idle smooths out. If it does, it's your culprit. If it doesn't fix things, look at your oxygen sensor. It may be reacting slowly and not telling the ECM to incrþase the fuel injection time.

pull the hoses...see how much oil is in them...i would think if you are passing loads of oil that could gum up iddle valves, throtle bodies etc but good...

They were oily. While I had the throttle body off, I could see a puddle in the intake housing, too. I dabbed it dry and reassembled. The fluctuating idle is still odd. The power is back to 'normal.' At least it's not bogging down anymore. Now if I could figure out the idle problem....
