Putt-putt found?? 200

In reference to my starting problems...........I thought maybe the cold start injector may not be working.Lacking a test light, I remove a vacuum line, and sprayed in some starting fluid, replaced the vac. line and hit the starter. After sitting out all night in close to single digit temps. it surprisingly started right up!! Problem solved?? Sound logical,Spock??

Thanx Mike in Pa. ;o)

MAybe not, if you need starting fluid to make the system work, something else is wrong. My cars start at -40F, granted they don't like it but they do start.
I suggest yo go back to the cold start system and check it out.

If the cold start injector is not working,I am using the starting fluid to subtitute for the injector. So the injector is not working either mechanically or electrically. Right?

The most failure-prone component in the cold-start injector system is the time/temperature controller that shuts off the injector after a certain amount of time, or after the engine hits a certain temperature. There may be different configurations in different years, but there has to be some sort of time/temperature controller, probably on the side of the engine.

Mine failed on my 1991 when the car was a week old, and has not failed again since. My sister's failed on her Toyota Celica at about 100k miles. In both cases, however, the failure mode was to fail to shut the injector off, rather than to fail to open it.

When my '91 brick was two years old, it flooded while on a trip to Iowa in winter. I figured the cold-start injector time/temperature controller had failed again, so I unplugged the cold-start injector until I got back to my garage in California. While in Iowa, the car started immediately in temperatures down to around 10F, without the help of a cold start injector. When I got back, I plugged in the injector again to test it, and it worked just fine. I never figured out why it had flooded.

You mention having a failed cold start injector on your 1991 240. I was under the impression that the LH2.2 and later had no cold start injector because the cold engine problem is handled with a different signal to the injectors from the ECU. But...I've been wrong before.

I have a 1986 and 1988 244GL, plain vanilla (no mods) and they both run rich. Maybe it's a cold start injector not shutting down. Can you tell me where to look on the engine for said CS injector?

Thanx,

Bob

I believe that the K-Jet equipped cars, LH 1.0 (82), 2.0 (83-84), and 2.4 (89-93) had cold start injectors. LH-2.2 (85-88) pulsed the normal injectors. On my cars (K-Jet) at least, the CSI is on top of the intake manifold.
