Wheel Bearing Problems on my 86 Volvo 200

Ok, my mechanic told me that one of my front wheel bearings was bad and I should change the two front wheel bearings. He said he would charge me $200.00. Is that about right? I feel like I have poured a lot of money into this car. I sure hope its worth it. I guess it beats car payments. My next major expense is the engine wiring harness, then its small things like fixing the odometer, the ignition switch is sort of loose. Is this type of stuff normal..

$200!!!

NO WAY!!

You can purchase the best bearings available for about $60, new seals for about $8, a tub of grease for about $5 and with a jack and a handful of common tools, you can install new bearings and bearing seats for less than $65 and two hours of your time.

A professional mechanic gets the bearings and seals at discount for $40, has plenty of grease and tools on hand plus a hydraulic lift..and has learned to do this job in less than 2 hours.

Even at $50 per hour for labor and 25% mark up on parts, the total should $140 TOPS!!!

my .02....Get another mechanic.

You need a new mechanic. $200 is way out of line even if he replaces both bearing assemblies in the offending wheel. Shop around.

Hi Tippi, I was curious.. do you have a car care manual? Maybe get the "Haynes Volvo Manual for 200 series". It is actually a good manual, and it will be @ mostly any disc. auto stores. The manual will give you an idea at least what's wrong with your car. (This site is actaully better). I'm really not sure about the wheel bearings, but you pointed out the prob. w/ the odometer, which might be the odom. gears, or if not maybe the cable (which I've heard is another common prob.). Try checking under the dash cluster underneath the stearing wheel, there is a black carpeted panel. Take it off. reach up into the cluster w/ care, and there will be the cable. If it's not attached, that will prob. be your problem. Even if it won't screw back on and is broken, you can still stick it back on to the odometer cluster (for temporary function). This happened to me, so I hope that is the case. I know, sorry, for not helping you w/ the wheel bearing prob., hope this gives you an idea on the odom. repair....StreetAngel

Hi Tippi,
Your model year 240 has an electronic speedo. No cable to worry about. The odometer gear is a good home project. There is a person here who posts and offers replacement odo gears. I don't have the url because I'm not at home.
Try a search of the board using the odo gear. I'm sure you'll find the post.

In my opinion that is a high price for replacing the wheel bearings. It seems to me that shops charge what the market will bear. Prices for repairing and maintaining your car sure seem to be going up fast. Wish you well, if you are near Southern NJ I can recommend some good shops.
