rear bushings? time? 200

I have a clunk in my rear end of my 93 240 wagon and am taking it to my Volvo mechanic tomorrow to have him look at it. It clunks when going over bumps. I see IPD sells the rear end bushing complete kit for 159.00 How much would the installation be in hours for the whole job? or in price if you have that? I would try to get some of them myself but I'm at college and all of the tools are 13 hours away. stink.
Thanks for the help.

Rear trailing arm bushings (big ones on the axle) have to be done on the car. You can rent or make a tool to replace them, which takes just over an hour (if lucky, much longer and many swear words if unlucky). (I made the tool -- search the archives for URL with directions -- wasn't hard, cost about $40.)

However, all other rear bushings are on arms that can be taken off the car and brought to a good suspension shop for replacement. I paid about $80 for rear bushing replacements off the car. And I know for a fact that the suspension shop had trouble with them: at 10:30PM I talked via phone with the not-very-pleased mechanic. But they were ready the next morning!

Other posts say you need a 20-ton hydraulic press to replace the bushings. Seemed practical for me to take it to a good suspension shop.

The car will need an alignment after any suspension work, of course.

you can't align the rear wheels on a 240, can you? I've been told(and believe) that there is no alignment possible...so if only the rear bushings were done, none would be necessary, right?

I agree with Eric-S,

don't rush to judgement on the bushings as cause of "clunk". You did not say how many miles are on the beast. I have done all bushings on a 91 240 sedan. the torque rod bushings and the panhard bushings are relatively easy..you don't have to support the axle etc...just remove the torque rod or the panhard rod and then press out the old and push in the new bushings...simple (recommend urethane replacement for the torque rods).

btw, $159 for rear bushings sounds kinda high..you can get the same stuff from FCP Groton for about one-half the price.

good luck

First, check to make sure that the exhaust isn't loose. That might be a cause of your clunk. Crawl underneath your car and see if you can see any signs of rubbing metal.

This may sound silly, but also remove everything from your trunk and see if the clunk persists.

I'm not sure about rebushing the entire rear, but replacing the trailer arm bushings run about $80 per side... well, at least that's what they cost in Gainesville, FL. Go Gators. :-)
