1. What is the best oil to use for the crankcase.
- Preferrably something with a pretty low viscosity for Canada this time of the year! Brrrrr! I use Mobil 1 in mine. I've heard it can make a really old engine leak a little but I haven't really noticed much of a problem.
2. What is this about oiling the carbs....And what oil should I use...
- SU carburettors havs 'dashpots' which act like little shock absorbers on the big pistons that move up and down as the air volume going thru varies. They are the black knobs on top of the aluminum cylindrical dome that sticks up the farthest of one. They slow the rise of the piston when the pedal is pushed down to enrich the mixture briefly (takes the place of an accelerator pump on a regular carb). Its one of the ways to subtly vary the tuning of the carb by chaning viscosities. But I generally use ATF fluid in them - especially in cold weather where 30 wt oil might turn to goo. Just unscrew the knob, pull the rod partway out, and fill up the interior with oil to near the top, and screw back in. The oil will slowly disappear with use. When they are out of oil the engine will develop a lean stumble when the gas pedal is pushed down.
3. What is the gas octane rating I should use...
- A B16B only has a 8.2:1 CR as stock - so you can run about anything in it. Probably not kerosene, but you could give it a try ;^).
4. What type of brake fluid...Dot4 or Dot3
- In general Dot4 - but there isn't a whole lot of difference between the two unless you include low quality very cheap DOT3 - which can eat Girling style natural rubber seals. You might consider getting some Dot5.1 (NOT DOT 5 silicone!) - it is compatible with Dot3 and Dot4 but neutralizes the moisture better so you don't have to flush and replace the fluid as often. You should replace the DOT3 or DOT4 fluid every couple of years - bleed them at all 4 wheels until clear fluid comes out of each bleeder. Otherwise moisture builds up and both lowers the boiling point of the fluid (use the brakes hard and they will suddenly quit working completely) and eventually start rusting the system from the inside. Supposedly they make 'long life' Dot5.1 which can be left in for up to 10 years.
