Beware of the 100,000 mile timing belt 900 1995

The timing belt on my new 1995 945 Turbo is supposed to last to 100,000 miles. At 97,100 miles it broke yesterday costing me $307 for the tow and repair. If you have one that says change it at 100,000 miles, I would advise changing it early. When this car hits 150,000 miles I will change the timing belt even if it is a 100,000 mile belt. Don't believe the 100,000 mile rating.

my mech changes timing belt (all timing belts) at 1/2 manufactures recomended..his comment is 'its cheap insurance' - and all the cars hes looked after for me have reached astronomical milages...

also depends on the age along with the mileage. For an 8 year old belt, its not that unsual.

That's one of the EGR-equipped 940Ts with the "100,000" mile timing belt?

The last time I busted a timing belt, it was $299. Practially the very same price as it cost you.

How pissed would you be if that was an interference engine?! Although, I strongly suspect that Volvo wouldn't have spec'd a 100k change interval on that car.

Somehow I'm doubting that the belt is any different for the 940T w/EGR (100k) or the 940T/940 w/o EGR, with the "50k" belt. I wonder if they just used the same belt and called one 100k because they knew it wouldn't break.

"I didn't see" a distinction in the parts catalogs. (= admitting possible misinformation, not to be interpreted as truth)

It was a FCP Groton part number: 271747 which is a different number than the 50K ones or earlier year models ones.

Mr. Sargent pointed out an important distinction; the 940T had two different belts. One was for 91-92, the other for 93-95. But there does not appear to be a different belt listed for the later 940T w/EGR, which were listed as 100k belt interchange cars. The non-EGR cars had 50k interval belts.

Curiously, the 960/S90 had an extended (90 or 100k) belt change interval for--I believe--EGR cars only. Naturally that is a different T-belt and tensioning system. But I guess my point is, I'd be pretty pissed if I drove to 95k and the belt puked. Because Volvo said it was "ok" to go farther.

I know a guy who changes timing belts at like HALF of their recommended interval. Sometimes less. Any hint of wear and he's in there changing them. He changed one on a 1995 960, that had 30k on it...

Mine must be w/EGR(how do you tell?) because the owners manual says 100,000 miles which surprised me.

That is because it has the rounded teeth instead of the square teeth.
