Tranny Oil leak -Home Seal Replacement... Bushing as well? 200 1989

Hi all,

I have a tranny oil leak that dripping down in the rear down over the coss-member.
I believe this is the tranny seal where the drve shaft enters?
In replacing the seal I have heard there is a bushing that requires replacement also. I have been looking at the Hayes manual (pg 7A-5)I see no mention of a bushing. Is this job doable at home and where do I get a pin-type spinner (in Canada). The job was done previously at a shop at 200k I'm now at 431k. I would like to wait till spring to attempt when the weather is a bit warmer

Many Thanks

There's a bushing and a seal at rear of the trany right before the drive shaft flange. We are talking about an auto right? Once the bushing goes, the seal goes. To replace it, the way I do it, is to remove the rear extension housing, and take it to a trany place press in the new bushing and seal. About 2-3 hrs of work.

There's a really nice tool for doing this job that eliminates the need to remove the rear housing. It's a special puller that costs about $80. I think IPD sells it. It's basically a bunch of skinny fingers that can slip under the bushing, then a reinforcing ring that's shoved under the fingers to lock them out against the ID of the bushing. A long puller bolt threads through the center to pull the whole thing out. It's a relatively new invention for this job and it works GREAT. I just used one at my friend's shop the other day to do a tailshaft bushing/seal on my 87.
You're right, the seal goes bad because the bushing goes bad. Replacing just the seal may work for a bit, but it will leak again soon. Any Volvo shop should have this tool - you may find it's worth it to have them do the work, since it's under an hour with this tool. Nothing gets pressed, no taking apart the transmission. Just unbolt the driveshaft and pull the bushing. Nice and simple.

IPD shows the tool here and you can rent it to get the job done at home:

Thanks For the tips

unfortunatley there is no IPD here in Canada. However I will investigate about the tool.
