88 765ti upgrade? to a 94 855ti 700

Hey Bricksters,

Today on a wim I passed a 94 855 turbo LOADED to the brim with 98,000 at a mom and pop type of car lot asking price $5500. So I took it on a test drive and WOW! This car is a LOT faster than my 88 765ti. I love my 765 but I think at the price its too much of a good deal! Only one problem the A/C doesnt work. I checked out the engine bay everything was clear the fluids look like they have recently been changed. I am debating going for it. I need some advice my 765 has brake problems and the A/C is fading, the heat works great tho. How reliable are the 850 turbos compared to the 700 turbo series? Going to read in the 800 forum now.. Please reply so I can figure out what I am doing!

Thanks,
Paul

That would be a 1994 855 Turbo 'Sportswagon'?i 700

Try posting over at "AWD".

Yes, they are fast, 0-60 in the mid 7s with the AT and a top speed (not computer-limited for '94) of 155mph.

As for the reliability and maintainance issues......well, post over at AWD.....

I have heard that they were not exceptionally reliable until 96,97.

Like most first-year Volvos, the "first year" 1993s were "unique'. I don't know that they're particularly reliable or unreliable for any other year. Like any car, the enjoyment or misery associated with any used example probably depends on the previous maintainance history.

They probably aren't the easiest cars in the world for the shadetree mechanic to work on, though.

could've sworn 855 was FWD. oh well, regardless, i have an feeling that those probably have problems. wasn't it volvo's first time in the FWD sector? i dunno, this is all conjecture.

Hence my referral over to "AWD".

Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought the first FWD Volvos were the 440-460 series, 1989-.

The 850s do have many more moving parts than your 740, of that I am sure.

Well if the AC doenst work be prepared to tear the dash completely apart since its most likely the condensor. The transmissions on these early cars also like to go into winter mode....and make sure you change the timing belt (and that its already been done) because its an interference engine and will eat valves. The price is really low so be ready for repairs
