Look on the service label. On a 244 it's found by opening the trunk and looking at the oening frame above the RH hinge. A 1 on the brakes line means Girling Front and Rear, a 2 means Birling front, ATE rear.

PS: If you get the Volvo Service Manual Section 0 (03) Specifications for your 1990 240 Volvo you will find a ton of information therein, including the above decoding of service label info. www.volvocars.com/lit let me know if you have a problem finding the book. Also get the Volvo Wiring Diagram book if you don't have it, there's info in there far beyond Haynes and Bentley.
