245 turbo run fine on a FULL TANK OF GAS but not at 1/2 full???? 200

I just got this 245turbo a 83 with a stick last week
after a drive saturday it was running ruff over 3000rpm allmost like rev-limiter was kicking in a that rpm then the GAS GAUAGE droped from about 1/2 full to empty
way too quickly like in two blocks!!!
so I headed to the gas station for a fill up
it clicked off at only 6-7 gal and seemed full on repeated clicks
but now rev's to 6000rpm like it should
after driving kids all around town coming home last night
the 3000rpm limit reappeared at 1/2 tank level
the car run fine below that rpm but just cuts off at 3000rpm
what should I check first????
second?? third???

245 turbo run fine on a FULL TANK OF GAS but not at 1/2 full???? 200

My turbo did that when I bought it.

The small (2") Neoprene hose in the tank that connects the pump to the pipe was rotted. New hose fixed it.

Also, my car had sat for 18-24 months, and a line of rust developed in the sender so it wouldn't pivot down until I hit a bump, and then it dropped.

While I had the sender out for the hose I also freed up the float so it would pivot smoothly throughout its range.

Yes, it is certainly the in-tank connecting hose slipped or broken. Cheap fuel hose will loosen with time and slip. Read the post "Thanks Bricksters" from earlier today, below.

245 turbo run fine on a FULL TANK OF GAS but not at 1/2 full???? 200

Hello,
Great to hear another turbo is alive. Hopefully soon it will be well. It is probably the intank fuel pump. Sometimes the pump is actually good but the small hose that connects it to the output pipe decays and the gas gets pumped
back into the tank. If you listen at the fuel filler with the cap off you
can hear the pump if it's runnning. On my friends turbo you could hear the pump running but you could also hear the fuel splashing back into the tank because that little hose was bad. We replaced the little hose and the car is fine.
Hope this helps you.

Hole in the in-tank fuel pump rubber hose , allowing air to be sucked-in, in place of gas, when gas-tank is at 1/2 and less?

I might be wrong but the B21 Turbo engine does not have a rev-limiter anyway.

Ray, if you mean dropping the tank to fix your in-tank pump, there is no need to. You gain access to the in-tank pump by lifting open the floor in the cargo area of your wagon. There you will find a lid with short metal pipes + rubber hoses sticking out. That lid will come off with the pump attached to it.

I am too tired to explain the whole procedure at length. You will find it detailed in the archives by using, under the "help" feature, the "search" option. Be very careful as you will be working around gasoline vapors.

Good luck!

No need to remove fuel tank, for 245's you remove the rear storage compartment lid to get to the fuel tank access cover. With the access cover removed (with screwdriver) you can get to in-tank pump and hose....I just bought a Haynes 240 series manual, but the Bentley manuals are highly recommended on this board..

245 turbo run fine on a FULL TANK OF GAS but not at 1/2 full???? 200

ok did that but the hoses are not hoses
just rubber covered steel pipes!!!!!!
I finialy crawled under the car and found the connections return was a hose clamp but the main was a flareNUTS but the flares are stuck good!!
14mm flare nuts?? my adjustables will not move them
and I can't find my 14mm cresent[open end] will a flare wrench fit over the rubber covered tubes anyway???? do I need two of the over priced flare wrenches????

btw the mainline from the out of tank pump to the filter can , [wow thats a big filter!!!] up on the firewall, begain to leak so I replaced it but with a rubber normal gas line like the one that was on the car, is that stock?, or should it be a steel tube unit too???? or it that just for the between pumps bit of the gas line???

allso the small return, the 3 line is capped at the tank top fitting and cut off open, under the car is that a problem too???? why two return lines anyway????
