Commonly overlooked, just a tip 200 1983

Ok...here's a tip that I wasn't awakre of a while ago, and it cost me a lot for something stupid.
Here's the scene: near 9PM, on a dark highway. My old faithful 83 DL is leading a nice light grey cloud up the highway. Not dark, just a 'spooky fog' in the rearview. We pulled in at a rest stop, and when I looked under the car, there's a nice little lake of oil. No parts, no smoking...just a new lake.
(some details omitted for brevity)...Had the car towed 125 miles to a shop (luckily, my brother worked there). Nearly $200 and a rear main seal later, I discovered that all this trouble was caused by one part. Something that I piad for with the change in my pocket. (about $1.00)
Check your flame trap regularly. Really. I learned this the hard way. I asked 'What's a flame trap?' about $200 too late.
Just thought I'd offer.
BTW...is there something similar on a turbo that I should check as well? (Thought it best to ask now.... :) )

Yep.

Had exactly, precisely the same thing happen to my '83 about a month after I bought it (a mere baby with 130k miles at the time).

The excess pressure popped the seal outta its housing.

No flame traps on the turbos.

Thanks.
Is there something else that serves the same purpose? I'm new to how turbos work and am trying to learn as much as I can before putting this thing back together. (Waiting for my Bentley manual to be shipped)

I think the same PCV system plumbing is there on the turbos, but just without the flame trap.

Lucky it was just a rear main seal, you can drive a ways like that. The rear cam seal can also go out with poor flame trap mx and then you have a really big mess.

A clogged Trap can cause oil pressure build up.
Front and rear seals as well as the large rubber plug at the rear of the Head may become compromised when that happens.
I guess I'm a few hundred dollars too late.
Sorry
