Commonly overlooked, just a tip 200 1983

Ok...here's a tip that I wasn't awakre of a while ago, and it cost me a lot for something stupid.
Here's the scene: near 9PM, on a dark highway. My old faithful 83 DL is leading a nice light grey cloud up the highway. Not dark, just a 'spooky fog' in the rearview. We pulled in at a rest stop, and when I looked under the car, there's a nice little lake of oil. No parts, no smoking...just a new lake.
(some details omitted for brevity)...Had the car towed 125 miles to a shop (luckily, my brother worked there). Nearly $200 and a rear main seal later, I discovered that all this trouble was caused by one part. Something that I piad for with the change in my pocket. (about $1.00)
Check your flame trap regularly. Really. I learned this the hard way. I asked 'What's a flame trap?' about $200 too late.
Just thought I'd offer.
BTW...is there something similar on a turbo that I should check as well? (Thought it best to ask now.... :) )
