whistling noise when cold 200

Hi

Yesterday Iīve noticed some strange noises. It is a very high whistling noise (like in those navy movies when the admiral enters the ship and a shipmate whistles to announce him).

It appears at around 50 mph and disappears at about 80 mph. After driving about one hour at average highway speed, the sound disappears completely and doesnīt return till the next trip after a cold start - seems that it depends on how warm the car is. The same sound only a lot quieter appeared first last winter but it didnīt last very long so I forgot it. Troughout the summertime it never appeared again.
Now the concert is present again. Itīs around -5° C outside.

Is that something which is fixable DIY or is it a shop work?
Thanks a lot for any input!

PS: The car is a 1989 wagon with M47 manual transmission!

Have a nice day and lots of greetings -- Ciao M.P.

You can eliminate from the enquiry, or sometimes cure the fault for good, by releasing the driveline bearing from the rubber support and spinning it by hand.
If it sounds suspect, carefully work some oil under the rubber seal onto the race and spin it a bit. Mine developed a noise like the axle breaking up. It has been fine for 50,000 miles just with a squirt of oil.

M.P.,

Could be your center driveline support bearing. I had a whistling/wining sound while driving when the car was also cold for about 30-60 min and then it would disappear. I noticed it around 40-60 mph. I just had it replaced and the noise is totally gone. Also, check out the archives for info too.
Best,
Adam

Hello M.P.

I think it could be a belt... Try to control tension and age...

This may happen by cold or moisten weather.

Ciao!
