Start-up trouble 900

For the past week or so, my 940 will struggle to get started. At first I thought it was my battery, but now it seems worse. When I turn the ignition, the engine makes that starting up noise, but it keeps going. Then when it seems like it's starting, the engine stops but all the gauges are on as if the engine were on. If I try again but give it a little bit of gas, it starts up ok. I'm not sure, but I think it's possibly the fuel filter or the injectors? The car is fine once it's running. Any suggestions?

It could just need a tuneup. When was the last time you changed the plugs? They're only supposed to go 30,000 miles. The distributor cap and rotor should also be inspected and replaced if needed. Likewise the plug wires, though they do not have a definite lifespan.

The crank sensor (aka engine speed sensor) is also a likely culprit. It could be failing, and since it's probably original, it would be a good idea to replace it before it leaves you stuck somewhere. It costs less than one ride on a tow truck.... I think they're $47 from Volvo.

You could also try a new fuel pump relay, though I do not think that's the problem in this case. It's always good to carry a spare- again it's a common failure point, and it will leave you completely dead if it does fail. They have a date code on them so you can tell if it's old or not. Any relay over about 6 years old is subject to sudden failure. Again, it's cheap insurance against a breakdown.

I agree. I just went through same problem with my 940, then one day two weeks ago I went to a spray car wash as no start. Then I remember the last time I had the problem it was a cold damp night. Replaced plugs and wires and immediate preformance enhancement and spray wash immune.

I had recently replace distributor cap, injector o-rings, fuel press reg., radio suppression relay, fuel pump relay and power stage; thinking I covered my 200,000 mile preventative maintenance. How in the world I did not think of the basics like plug wire I dont' know.
