740 Remote locking 700 1990

Has anybody upgraded the central locking to remote operation on their 740?
If so, did you fit a complete kit, or just the remote kit and convert the drivers door by fitting either a Volvo or aftermarket lock motor?
I have heard of this being done by fitting a passenger door motor from the breakers yard but as a generic motor can be bought here (UK) for the equivalent of $15 it hardly seems worth the trouble of getting one out of a scrap car and then finding that they want as much, if not more than $15 for a second hand one.
Should I use a five wire motor and do away with the existing door lock switch, or use a two wire motor and keep the switch, or by using the the two switch wires to run the two wire motor saving running more wires through the door pillar?
Any advice ie. two or five wire motor, make of kit to use etc. greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance,
Colin UK.

I went with the factory motor from a junkyard. 25USD and the nice thing about it is that it is manufactured in such away that you just disassemble the mounting bracket and linkages, reverse them and reassemble. You don't have to figure out how to mount the aftermarket motor. To me it was worth the extra 10 bucks to have ease of fitting.

The factory motor is two-wire and I left the swith intact so the second hand motor unlocks the driver's door and of course then unlocks the other four.

The hardest part was threading the wires trough the door. The grommett is pretty tight.

    Good Luck!

just curious- what lock rods did you find worked correctly for the driver's door motor? I've got rods from a rear door and a front passenger door and I'm looking to do this installation as well. Any trouble with the linkages?

I just pulled the motor, pivot, linkages and locking clips from the passenger side front door from the same model. The linkages worked just fine. Only problem was getting my fat hands in the tight space to work.

Yes I've installed a keyless entry system. I used an old 240 actuator that I had sitting around for the driver's door. I would keep the existing door lock switches, and add two more wires to the wire loom for the actuator. It's painful but worthwhile. The only advice I have regarding the kit choice is make certain it will use a ground, or earth, trigger for lock and unlock on separate wires.

    Good luck-
    Dylan
