Bump goes the 240 Wagonn 200

I'm hearing a single "clunk" when I accelerate from a stop. It appears to be coming from behind the passenger seat area. I've noticed that this only happens after a few minutes of driving and only if I accelerate from a stop. If I accelerate really slowly I don't get the clunk.

I will check the exahust, rear transmission mount and rear bushings. Any other hints?

Later,

Paul

The bushings or shock mounts cited in the other post are the most likely culprits BUT, have you taken a look in the three storage areas under the rear deck in the back of the wagon? Anything in there rolling around?

You're on the right track. About 50% chance it's the exhaust. It could also be from rear shocks. Have a look at the shock bushings. Also get it jacked up so you can see the rear trailing arm bushings. They do go bad and can have almost an inch of play in them when they're shot.

Also try to see the condition of the torque rod bushings. These are the two small tubular rods that are above the axle and control how much it can twist when you accelerate. If these are bad, replacements are available but some cars have a style that requires you to press them in. If you'd like to minimize the down time for your car, you can pick up a set of torque rods at a junkyard, install new bushings to them, and then just swap out the ones on your car. Since there are two styles, and you don't know what is in there till you pull one out, this could be the easy way to do it.
