Front wheel noise / vibration 900 1991

My 1991 Volvo 960 has started to make a funny noise which seems to be from
the front right wheel (looking out the windscreen), it seems like its a
vibration / shudder that travels through the car only when its warm (10 miles+)
and running over 30 mph. It makes a big noise which goes briefly when I hit
the brakes hard or goes quieter if I swerve left or right a bit and slow
down.

I don't get any judder through the steering wheel, it drives in a straight line and doesn't have warped disks.

I've owned it for 4 months and done 3k

Any ideas ?

Only 80k miles

Cheers
Stephen

Check the ball joints and wheel bearings. Our 740 had a terrrible vibration on high speed corners before we replaced the ball joints. It was the right one, and the vibration came on hard left turns.
Be sure that the rotors are good- they are a common trouble spot on all 700 & 900 models.

Good luck,

The rotors are the disks ? I'm thinking it might be the wheel bearing or possibly the brake pads as it squeals a little when driving at about 3 mph. I noticed today that the noise / vibration is always there its just after a few miles it gets much worse.

How long will the bearing take to change ? how can I test if it's faulty ?

Thanks

If yours is the same as my '95 960, the front wheel bearings are part of the hub assy. Volvo will sell you a new hub for about $250.00 US. Try jacking the front wheels off the ground and then try to wobble the wheel top to bottom and side to side. Any side to side play indicates a worn tie rod end. Top to bottom play may be a bad wheel bearing. The hub nut is torqued to a very high level (forget exactly, but something like 125 ft-lb plus 45 degrees). The nuts are not reusable.

One of mine went bad when the grease seal disintigrated letting salt, water and sand in. I am still living with it and soon will dig in to see if there is away of pressing out the bearing and installing a new one.
