turbo rebuild/replacement 700 1986

Hello all, I may be coming into the possession of a 1986 760 turbo wagon. I used to have a turbo MX-6 so I am used to pre run and post run and frequent oil changes of a turbo. But the car is coming to me in need of a rebuilt or new turbo, can anybody recommend a place to buy or send my turbo to be fixed, and are there any general hints as to removing one. I know in the old Mazda's you had to be really carefull not to break any exhaust manifold mounting studs due to the brittleness of being heat cycled so much. Any feedback will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hi:

There was this lady on EBay selling rebuilt cartriges for Turbos. I bought one for my 1986 Turbo Wagon. Look under Volvo Turbocharger. I'll also see if I can find my receipt. Worked good gor me, she did a nice job around $125.00. And you don't have to send her your core. It wasn't too hard to replace. I took the complete Exhaust Manifold off and worked on the bench. Make sure you soak the Manifold and Turbo nuts overnight with a good Penitrating Oil, I used Kroil. Makes a big difference and saves alot of cursing and grief.

Good luck
Warren

I second Warren's suggestion on the pdnetrating fluid. But I'd soak the studs twice a day for a week (seriously!) if you have the time. After all, it's easy to spray fluid from a can. But if one of those studs breaks, you could be looking at some serious headaches.
And maybe I should change my handle from "tvpierce" to "crazy_torch_guy", but don't forget, a propane torch can be your best friend when you have a stuck bolt or nut. Mine has never let me down.

Hmmmm, backs away from man weilding torch. Got to play with torches when my back brake adjusters on my Dodge Spirit got locked all the way out, took out my rear drum cylinders too, much cursing ensued that day. Thanks for the advice.

I have a turbo from a low mileage 86 740 if you need.

Go to www.turbobricks.org

Then go to the Links section.

Look for Herman Cherry Turbo's. Might just be under "cherry turbo" He does lots of great work for the crowd. Specializes in the Mitsu turbo though. If you have a Garrett, you can buy new center sections on e-bay for like 100 bucks, then take it to a big truck shop, around here they will rebuild it for me. And i know of people in the states who do the same.

Good luck

Jordan
