93 940 wagon 900

Could someone tell me why a broken timing belt would result in no spark at cylinders 3 and 4. Well I finally fixed it two weeks ago after being out of town for most of the last 8 weeks.

The wagon my 18 year old daughter drives to school died on the driveway the day the 24" snow hit the north east. That was February. The no spark symptom led me to replace the ignition wire set and rotor/cap, which I knind of suspected it was not going to solve the problem. On a hunch I open the timing belt cover. Well, the rest, is history.

The rotor must have been pointed in the direction of those two cylinders, thank the lord you did not have a 6304f engine. Replace timing belt and be glad that that was all it was.

Because the camshaft or the intermediate shaft (either of which can drive a 940 distributor depending on the distributor location) isn't turning. The distributor was probably stuck right between 1 and 2. If the cap was bad or even marginal, it could've caused multiple sparks between the closest terminals inside the cap.

The erratic noise when the engine cranks with a broken timing belt is indicative of the loss of compression in a couple of cylinders. Once you hear it once, you can usually diagnose a timing belt break without opening the cover.
