940 air bag replacement 900 1993

Bought a well-maintained 940 Turbo Sedan with all the extras. I really love the Turbo boost and will change the oil faithfully and let it idle to cool down. So much nicer than my 240 GL Sedan.

My wife noticed a sticker on the car that said that the air bags must be replaced after ten years. Has anyone done that and know how to find a good price? Is it really necessary? What happens if we don't replace the one air bag it has on the passanger's side?

    To answer your question:

Volvo moved that recommendation to fifteen years, so you still have several years before you should replace the airbags. Total price will probably be around $1000 or so. I don't know if the seatbelts are included in that replacement schedule. If so, figure another $300/belt (2 required).

Typically airbags would be replaced in pairs.

does anyone know if the airbag replacement recommendation is because they felt the airbags (and pyrotechnic belt tensioners) might not deploy properly in an accident; or because the propellant could become unstable and deploy (ie: explode) accidentally? I might be prepared to live (ho!) with the former, but not the latter.

I believe the primary concern was that the airbags would (could) fail to deploy. I don't see how the explosive charge could deploy accidentally since it is based upon a fixed signal from the crash sensor. However, if it was so unstable that it could explode without any signal whatsoever, I guess that would be very bad. I doubt they'd have stretched the limit on airbags if they were going off at random times.
