Brake part question. 200 1988

Hello all
My 88 245 is squealing bad on the rear brakes. I replaced the pads a while back but I suspect they where el-cheapos. I would like to order some from all-oemvolvo parts. My question is, on the web site i select 88 240 and then "rear". I then see several listings. I have the brakes that have the metal spring shaped like "+". I dont know if they are ATE or Girling but I have the other style on front. The listings on the web site do not say "ATE" or "Girling". Should I just assume they will ship the correct one's? and is dan block much better than PBR?
Thanks very much
Joe Scott

Thanks guys
The problem is actually in ordering the pads. The entries on the web site do not specify ATE or Girling. They just show pictures of pads. I think the front are girling but the only choice i have on alloemvolvo.com is "Front". Should I assume that they will know the pads should be Girling for that year and model?

Thanks again

joe

I may be mistaken but I am pretty sure the pads are the same for Girling or ATE. the calipers are interchangable except for the hardware. I recently replaced the seized girling rear calipers with some nice junkyard ATEs, and I don't remember getting new pads, so they must be the same. The only thing you have to worry about is vented vs solid, but all 88s had vented anyway.

They are most easily distinquished by the pins. The Girlings have little hairpins holding them in. The ATE are a friction fit, you just punch them out. If you have an 88 they are almost definitely ATE.

When you get your new brakes, make sure you get the teflon-backed shims as well. About $5 a set from the dealer and cheaper yet from fcpgroton.com. On my 240's it alsways seems it's the rears that get noisy, and using the Sil-Glide lube on the pins and between the pads and shims (NOT on the friction surface!) helps prevent squealing.

There is a label on the car which will have a code revealing what type brakes your car is equipped with. On the 245 it is on the top of the rear support rail. It is visible only from inside the right rear storage area. Remove the cover and look along the right side. It is the Service Label.

Look on the line for brakes. A "1" means Girling brakes, front and rear. A "2" means Girling front, ATF rear.

While you are in there, look at the line for Steering Gear. A 2 means the power steeting rack is a CAM Gear, a 3 means it is a ZF. The rubber boots which protect the inner tie rod joints are quite different. The ZF boot seals to a disc on the tie rod, the CAM boot seals directly on the rod.

The other lines, such as Fuel Pump (3 means Bosch) were important when Volvo used many different suppliers. That is no longer the case, AFAIK.

I hope this is helpful.

Bob
