Over Involved in Fixing the Volvo 200

Just wanted to let you know we gave up on trying to fix the car for now. It starts and idles with or without the AMM plugged in. Stalls immediately when put in gear. We've changed the 25 amp, no go.
After six solid nights of fiddling we were going to smash her to bits if we didn't stop.
Next time we get back to it I'd like to check the circuit board under the passenger's knees that has to do with the fuel pump. It's white and has a plug on it, if I'm looking at the right thing, but how does it open?
I'll also look at this IAC again and try running the test that someone posted.
Also, is there fuel pump lines near the trunk that I can check? My son is always hauling alot of heavy stuff on that side of the car and I'm thinking maybe the weight dislodged something :/(Grasping at straws now) ~claudie~

Claudie, you did the right thing by taking a break! Patience and I do not go together sometimes, so I know when to take a break, before I kick the Volvo grille in. Keep up the good work and were here for you. :-)

Thanks Michael :) After awhile you just have to step back because it all just becomes muddled as to what we did and what we were going to do ... and if I heard that engine crank and not start one more time .... aaauuugh! Maybe this weekend we'll get back to it and start afresh, but I'm thinking that I really should change the distributor wires and the spark plug wires before we do another thing. As Butch Cassidy said to Sundance "you just keep on thinkin' Butch, that's what you do best." ~claudie~

The fuel pump in the tank only seems to make a difference when your fuel gets low. My 86 wouldn't start well or idle with the pump bad, but only when it got below half a tank. I would try a fuel pressure check. The fuel pressure regulator is only $36.00 from FCP Groton. A rebuilt AMM for our year model is only $155.00 from them also. Another thing to look at although it seems silly is the plugs/wires/distributor cap/rotor. My car has been getting a bit sluggish lately, and got worse after changing my timing belt this weekend. I had the cap off a couple of times while I was setting the timing, and the cap looked OK, not great, but OK. I replaced the cap and rotor with Bosch items and the problem that I had with the car stumbling after shifts went away. My experience so far with Volvo's has been to try the simple (cheap) stuff first.
Hope this helps,
Lance

I haven't read any of your other posts. So....

Have you replaced/checked the fuel pressure regulator? My car idles fine but it stumbles badly when accelerating. Getting a new FPR as soon as it arrives. A friend of mine's 740 had different symptoms. His car idled poorly, ran rough and then finally died altogther.

If you haven't already, be sure and read the 700/900 FAQ from the pull down menus at the top of this website. Same engine (b230f) and lots of issues and possible fixes discussed.

Good luck,

I'm cornfused. You write:

"It starts and idles with or without the AMM plugged in. Stalls immediately when put in gear. We've changed the 25 amp, no go......"

That sounds like an AMM problem to me, or an AMM connector...why have you ruled this out?

We thought if it wouldn't idle properly with the AMM IN, but did idle fine when the AMM was removed, then it would be an AMM problem. But it's idling fine with the AMM in. Doesn't that mean it's not the AMM??? ~claudie~

Mostly but not 100% true - especially if you have an AMM connector problem...

I don't know much about your model but I believe that if the fuel pump were
not working more or less as planned it would not run at all.
BTW there is so much difference in different models of the 240/260, you
would do yourself and potential responders a favor by NOT posting the year
model as "ALL". Some of us are getting old and can't remember what year
yours is.

It's a 240 DL .. I didn't realize there was a pull down menu to list that. Sorry. ~claudie~
