ABS Trouble Light - 940 900

Hi, I recently noticed my ABS system was not working when I had to stop suddenly and a few days later the ABS trouble light came on. Someone mentioned a pump or perhaps a computer is needed for the car - does anyone know of any 'common problems' with 1992 940's with the ABS? ... many thanks...K. Eiring.

See the 700/900 FAQ For problems.

The pumps and computers aren't very likely to fail on that car, although they can. The good part is that they are easily available used, for inexpensive money (because they last a long time, there are good salvaged ones).

There could be a malfunction with the switch on the brake pedal, or a sender problem from either one of the two front wheel sensors, or the rear axle sensor.

Any of these can throw an ABS trouble code. You can manually extract the trouble codes for the ABS module. See the 700/900 FAQ for more information.

We had this problem intermittently and the dealer merely cleaned the front probes which accumulate metal particles. I haven't had this problem since 94. I clean the sensor probes each time I do a brake job.

JetDriver, thanks for that piece of information, I now remember those protective rubber discs were removed from my wheels a while back when I bought new tires and I wonder if that may allow some of the metal particles to collect at a greater rate, I'll have a look. Thanks much for your help....K. Eiring.
