Gas milage on a '96 960 wagon 900 1996

Have 83K on this 960 wagon I have owned since new. Car is well maintained and I drive conservatively. Lately my gas milage has fallen to 16 city/ 21 highway. An independent shop has run diagnostics and not found anything amiss. Someone at the shop even suggested this was normal milage. I'm thinking I used to get 21/24.

What kind of milage should I be getting, and are there any suggestions? I do have an appointment with a dealership in a couple of weeks. Thanks.

The 960 has several sensors that may cause lower gas mileage; knock sensor, ecm temp sender, cam sensor, but most of all dirty throttle body and broken vacuum hoses. Our 960 is now on its third engine and with synthetic oil in everything I get 18/19 in the city, around 23 to 25 depending how fast the cruise control is set at.

We get around 400 miles per tank of mostly city driving. Have the shop check for the older intake manifold gasket. You may need to upgrade to the new green one if the current one is orange. Replacement takes 5 hours by the book or 1 hour using the revised prodedure.

Have them check the various sensors for correct operation. The dealer can check them all especially the O2 sensors.

Bruce since your mileage has fallen and assuming your driving habits have not changed, there are a couple of things that I can think of that can affect mileage. Your coolant temperature sensor may have failed which causes the computer to think that the engine has never warmed up, there by causing the engine to run rich, that would cause mileage to drop.
The other, not as likely is the O2 sensor, it may be a little sluggish but not enough to cause the MIL(Check engine) light to come on.

I would replace the coolant sensor first, not very expensive. Somebody else may have other thoughts.

Of course city driving has different definitions, depending on where you live, but in my city driving (real city, stop and go, 35 mph max for about 15/20 seconds and a trip of less than 20 minutes, depending on traffic) I get about 13 mph and 26 on steady interstate driving over several hours (greater than 5 hours). The 92 960 I owned wasn't much different. If I though for a minute that changing my driving style would yield me 21 mph in the city, you'd witness a transformed man.

Quite honestly, I doubt the claim of 21 mph in the city and I would be eternally grateful for 16 pmg in real city driving...! This is not a car that sips gas (ala Morris Minor) by any stretch of the imagination.
