Gas tank fouling 140-160

I know this had been covered a number of times - just wanted to share my experience: 1972 164E runs until the fuel pump sounds like it is breathing its last then the car quits runnnig for a little bit. Sound familiar? So, I finally took the fuel tank off the car, pulled the internal filter out, and found it packed with reddish colored "mud." The tank was dry, and when I picked it up it sounded like there was gravel in it - when I rinsed it out 1 & 2 inch chunks fell out. I am now "cooking" the tank with crud remover, and hope to get it rinsed out, and put back in the car this weekend. Who knows, maybe I'll start running corn squeezin's in it! That'll really clean it out. ;>)

I count myself lucky that I didn't burn up the fuel pump - it was working so hard.

Gas tank fouling 140-160

My 71 142E has a brand new gas tank that the previous owner had installed at a Volvo dealer in Denton, TX about 4 years ago. (ok, so I have a 4 year old gas tank, not a new one.)
I have the paperwork/receipt. It was about $500 for the whole install. Sort of pricey, but no hassels. I would have tackled it myself.

Perhaps an early 164 tank is available?

Here are prices from:
http://www.1aauto.com/products/fueltanks/volvogastanks.shtml

Volvo 140/164/260 Series 74-78 Gas Tank VL1A $254.95

Volvo 240/260 Series 79-93 Gas Tank VL1B $262.95

They don't have one for a 72. Does anybody have other sources?

Good luck,
Jeremy

My daughter Sophia driving the 142E!

I believe it is Eastwood that sells a liquid gas tank sealer. It seems to be very much like contact cement. It provides a seal on the inside of the tank that gasoline doesn't effect. It is sold by the quart and a quart would do more than one tank. It is mostly promoted as a product for rusty gask tanks but would probably seal any residual "crud" as well. Clean the tank as much as possible then pour in the sealer. Tape all the openings over and then turn the tank over and over in every direction until the inside is coated; remove the tape and drain out the excess. Worked great on an old Plymouth that had been sitting for years and had all forms of unidentifiable crud inside.

164 and 140 series use the same tanks as long as they both have the same
filler and the same induction system (carbs or FI)
I have a 68 142 tank in my 69 164.

Just a quick update - today I will be rinsing the alkali based cleaner out of the tank. Then a good rinse with grain alcohol - that should displace as much of the water has possible - and then finish with acetone, maybe. The tank goes back on the car today - I hope.
