suspension update and ? on wheels. what holds your brick to the road? 700

Ok...So on my 85' 765 turbo, i've installed the front disel springs, rear overloads in, kept my bilsteins, and threw on a set of IPD anti-swaybars and WOAH!!! performance and comfort. Man what a difference, I may have to cut the fronts a hair if the rear settles, as the car is level right after the initial installation of the rear springs. But no matter how good it gets, you always want more. Those stock 15 look too small in those massive wheel wells, hehe. anyway, i need more rubber on the ground and I read through the FAQ's about wheels and tires. I'm very aware of the closeness in the relation to the front strut to the tire. Basically im want to find out what you have on your brick. Wheel and tire size and offset. I dont want rubbing (if possible) and i cant loose much of the turning radius (that i love oh so much!) everyone has a different opinion so lemme know what you did and how it worked. Im thinkin of a 16x6 or 16x7 with a 20mm offset and a 50 series. Im in Los Angeles so rubberband tires(40-45 series) = bent wheels. did volvo make factory 16's that would fit my car? Tire brand ive got figured out, but the wheel thing is touchy. Id like to avoid using spacers at all costs. All the help is greatly appreciated!!! OH YA!

(still working on the pinging problem, let ya know when i find the answer)
If it aint broke, tweak it. I drive one trick brick!

I'm running much-taller-than-stock 215/60/16's on my 745 to compensate for the speedo error, so it is understandable to have some rubbing. Large bumps with the stock springs on the rear did some (cured with iPd overload springs), and at full lock, there's minor skimming on the radius rods. A shorter tire like a 215/50/16 (6.4mm diameter larget than the stock 195/60/15) should not have such issues.

Though many say 225's work, it'll be close, as up front on mine's, there's but just 8mm of clearance between the 215's and the strut tube.

    I'm running on Ronal R25's, 16" x 7.5, 20mm offset.

I like the pic, very nice. I want to go with the 16x7 or 7.5 and a 215/50 or 55. Id like to minimize rubbing, but dont want to beat myself up with the low pro tires. What tire brand do you run and how do you like it. I put a set of yokahama 205/45r16's AVS ES100's on my brothers nissan pulsar with a bone stock suspension and crappy gabrial shocks, and man does that thing stick. Im very impressed with the yokahama's and id like to stick to those, seeing as the tread wear isnt too bad. and i drive my brick hard! I sometimes the canyons and push it to the limit, so if it rubs from lock to lock i can live with it, i dont want it to rub in HARD cornering. I do have the IPD overloads in back though, and disel front springs, and IPD swaybars. I used to have IPD sport springs (now for sale) and those wont be going back in. Thanks for all the info, its much appreciated!!

I'm running Kumho HP4 716's, a Grand Touring All-season class tire. In the 20k I've driven, I have yet to have any issues with 'em, wet or dry. And in that milage, they haven't even worn 1/16". They're ran at 35 psi all around.

But again, I am running a much taller tire (8% larger). With a shorter tire, you shouldn't have any rubbing issues.

If your speedo is pretty on-target now, I'd opt for 215/50's (1% larger). If not, or you're willing to have it off by a bit, then go with 215/55's (4.5% larger), just so to open up the options. For even more options, though you'd lose some tire width, go with the suggested size of 205/55's.

I'd consider the Kumho Ecsta 712's (under $80/ea for those sizes at Tirerack). And yes, the Yokohama AVS ES100 are good tires too, but they don't offer 'em in the 215's.

BTW, I'm guessing that the next upgrade would be the Cherry Turbo braces?

-- Kane ... who actually felt more improvement with the braces than the iPd bars, but then, I went out of order and the braces went on before the bars did.

I currently have the Kuhmo 716's but in the stock 195/60 r15 size, Im not too happy with them, they didnt stick as well as i had hoped, but i may try the 712's with the bigger rims, people say they are a prety nice inexpensive sport tire. And ya i was kinda bummed about the yokahamas not coming in the 215 size. The next thing is going to be the wheels, with the chassis braces most definatly. Im planning on making the lower brace, seeing as its 3 peices of flat bar steel bolted together. and im not sure about the top yet. Im going to have to see about the price. College budjet can be hard to work with sometimes :) Thanks for all he help!!

I have Voxx wheels from discount tires. They are 17"x 7.5...Might be too much if you don't want to run 45's. I run 215/45/17 and will rub only if I am turned to full lock and hit a good size bump....Here is a link to wheels..Not sure if it a link to correct size..But you get the idea..

I have the 16" Volvo Hydras with Michelin 205 55 MXV4's on my lowered total IPDed 745T. Hydras are refered to as the cheese slicers.
I will tell you my front tires DO rub on the swaybar. So watch the width of the tires at least in the front. The 16" do fill the wheel wells with the car lowered. They do look great on a lowered Volvo.
