92 940 Hub replacement 900

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to track down a grumbling noise and associated tire wear in the front right of my 940GL. The grumble is most noted in the front right at slower speeds when turning to the left. I also have a shimmy that seems to be sporadic at moderate (30-60mph) speeds. I am suspecting that the front wheel bearing is failing, but I am not getting the high pitched whine that I am accustomed to. Is this a likely culprit?

My plan is to replace all of the bushings, ball joints and tie rod ends on both sides, as well as the right front hub. I've never removed the hub on this car...is there anything unusual abouth the process that will cause my children to learn new 4 letter words? I am counting 4 control arm bushings on each side as well as 2 stabilizer bar bushings. Does this sound right?

Thanks,

--Jim

Nothing special on the hub, seen one, seen 'em all. Tightening it is special however, follow directions.

I have done the whole front end of my 91 940 turbo 196,000miles. Two stabilizer bars, one upper bushing and one lower bushing, ball joint, and tie rod per side. The upper and lower bushings are pressed in and are a pain in the ass to press out. I had a 5ton press jump off the floor when the one released. Once I went through the trouble of getting them out, I realized they really did NOT need replacement. Once you’re into it, remove one of the control arm bolts and wiggle it around and inspect. Then make the call. I replaced the stabilizer arm with the poly style and have been pleased. It is very important that torque spec be followed precisely or clunking and damage will occur. The suspension also needs to be in its normal position when you tighten and torque any and all of the bolts. Since I do not have a lift, a good ditch worked fine. I found this out the hard way. I did not follow my advice. The car clunked after a couple of weeks. I messed around with the bolts but still the clunk. Broke down and bought a torque wrench, proceeded to torque them properly. Bingo…solved. Can’t help you on the hub…never been there.
