Turbo Owners - check those coolant hoses!!!

You (water cooled) turbo owners check the coolant hoses!!

We just went through a major heat wave here in the PNW (amazing I know, almost 90°F) and well as I was driving home I noticed my temp gauge on the 1985 245Ti heading a bit high.....and as I pulled into the driveway, ouuuu I smelled that smell, coolant a-bubblin'....and she was a-dribblin'....

Like a rock. The top turbo coolant hose. 4+ years old 3/8" hose so brittle it was approaching diamond hardness. I always have a nice stash of hose in the ge-rage. Replaced the lower hose too, it was still serviceable, but....took me maybe 30 minutes to replace both hose. Actually it took me longer to burp the system than anything else....she was being a bit stubborn with one or two trapped air pockets.

Were your bad hoses Volvo OEM or aftermarket?

Just orf the shelf 3/8" water hose....AFAIK this is what Volvo uses. They aren't molded or anything....just straight run. No part #.

With all the heat right around there, I would go to something more robust than a low-grade butyl or EPDM. Heat will kill these hoses faster than anything.

Shoot, THAT's a great idea....never thought of it, figured it's carrying coolant!

Maybe Silicone hose, or???

Turbo Owners - check those coolant hoses!!! 700 1992

Had a simular experience on the 92 745T I just bought. It is not a water cooled turbo, but it has some water hoses underneath that the previous owner had left unchecked. They are the two that go from the oil filter mount plate to the oil cooler.

Hard as a rock - original - one busted - got HOT real quick - was able to keep enough water in it to get to the shop - all turned out well.

Just glad I was not tooling on the interstate.

Yes I was fairly lucky I made it home!

I don't understand something. Your 745T doesn't have a water cooled turbo?
